Beinn a'Chochuill and Beinn Eunaich
27 March 1999
Photo of Beinn Eunaich

Map of Beinn Eunaich routeBeinn a'Chochuill and Beinn Eunaich are situated at the north eastern end of Loch Awe, tucked behind the bulk of the Ben Cruachan range. I climbed these mountains on my own, on a cold day with plenty of sunshine but occasional fast moving heavy cloud sometimes accompanied by short snow flurries.

I started from the old military road (B8077) just north east of Loch Awe near Castles Farm. I followed the farm track north north west above the Allt Mhoille, taking a branch in the track climbing north east at the Allt Lairig Ianachain. From the end of the track I climbed north towards the ridge between the two Munros, attaining the snow line just short of the ridge at a height of approximately 700m. The snow was fairly deep but quite firm on the ridge, and the summit of Beinn a'Chochuill was attained after a fairly easy walk west along this ridge. The summit offers expansive views of the Ben Cruachan range (photo) and the mountains on either side of Loch Etive.

I returned east along the ridge before climbing onto Beinn Eunaich (photo). I only stopped briefly here for a quick bite of food, as a heavy bank of cloud was approaching rapidly from the north west, and I decided to get as far down the mountain as possible before this bad weather arrived (as it happened the storm passed to the north of the mountain). I descended south along the ridge, and once below the snow line picked up a path which descended steeply south east to the farm track, which I then followed back to the car.

This was a walk of about 15km (9½ miles) with 1300m (4250 ft) of ascent.
