you play rob foster, a man who was orphaned as a child in an area called "the gap". now, after 20-odd years, men from the city come after you, they've taken you from your tribe, and then, as you're flying away, some kind of explosion occurs where your tribe's camp was. all that's left of your tribe is you and the circuit board from your robot, joey. as you're flying towards the city, a crash occurs and you manage to escape from the helicopter. you find yourself on a gangway high above the ground with a security officer patrolling the ground below.......

and so starts the best adventure game ever made. you've got to find your way back out to the gap, escaping the city. the interface is good, and not intrusive or space consuming (as i find/found monkey island's to be). the graphics are good, complementing the game well, and the items aren't too small either. the puzzles are intelligent and difficult, but not so difficult as to cause hair loss.

the sound is good, too. the music changes with each area, adopting a theme suited to it. the sound effects are pretty standard. sadly, though, there is no speech. about speech: actually, there is speech, just not in this version of the game. sold-out software have the cd version of this game available for the super reasonable price of £4.99, so if you *really* want speech, i suggest you get that (i'm assuming the cd version has speech, i'm not sure).

to summarise: beneath a steel sky is what all adventure games should be; brilliant, witty, intelligent and thought-provoking. the interface uses the virtual theatre pioneered by revolution software, which i find better than the interface in the monkey island games. the story is believable and well substantiated and the game is genuinely fun! alas, though, you are missing out. the version i have includes a cool wee comic book style thing, telling you the story before you're abducted, and without it, it won't be the same.

as mentioned above, this game is still sold; goto sold-out software's site for a bargain buy at £4.99. postage'll set you back a further £2.50, but it's available in shops such as electronics boutique, woolworths, etc.
