a true classic among hordes of average games. a veritible giant among pigmies. this games premise is simple: survive and wipe out the opposition. sounding just like life, worms united goes on to be a stormer of a game. simple, brilliant and highly enthralling. personal, too.

the nearest game to this that i've played is one called gorilla, an old q-basic game. in that you have to put in the force and angle you require to lob an explosive banana at your opposing simian. this game takes that premise and explands it somewhat. you play a team of 4 worms, each named personally (mine are: jools, boba fett, muaddib and !) and you proceed to blow the living hell out of anything upto 3 other teams. the worms aren't fixed like the afore mentioned apes, they can move, adding a twist to the game.

the graphics are somewhat basic, but this doesn't detract from the atmosphere of the game. the weapons vary for the bog-standard (uzis and shotguns) to the bizarre (banana bombs and exploding sheep). this adds some comedy to the game. the most amusing aspect, however, is the voices of the worms; when you name your team, you also get to choose a sound set for them. the scots and the soulmen sounds sets are, imo, the best.

having shamelessly praised this game, i must move onto it's faults. the biggest one i identified is the computer itself. it's almost impossible to beat it on your own (well, for me at least). also, it's a pretty crappy game when played on your own. my recomendation: get at least 2 friends round (3 is prefferable), get some irn bru and play this. you won't regret it.

worms united is available in most uk shops on the microprose budget range and the hasbro range, prices vary from about £9.99 to £12.99. also, worms (the original - no additions) is available from sold-out software for the insanely reasonable price of £4.99 (including £2.50 for postage). not sure if they sell outside the uk though.
