Modern Homosexualities. Fragments of a Lesbian and Gay Experience

(Ed.) Ken Plumber

Routledge, pp 281, 1992.

This is a collection of nineteen original essays by men and women looking to establish a dialogue with regard to the parameters of lesbian and gay experiences both academically and culturally. In short, a lesbian and gay studies.

'Fragments' they may be, but the complex nature and developments of the lesbian and gay community are charted through the subjects of identity, politics, and relationships, by authors as diverse as Peter Tatchell and Diane Richardson.

The book is uncompromising, it looks to the future and in so doing presents us with an agenda based on a certainty that is refreshing, actively looking towards the world in which gay and lesbian people can dictate in the mainstream instead of being ghettoised.

I really enjoyed this book. In some ways the challenges to straight men put forward by the gay community are considerably more far-reaching than the questions raised by feminism. At college, I studied sex and gender as part of my degree. Should my son choose to go to college, he may be able to take the Gay and Lesbian Studies option. May the dialogue continue.
