| Distillers Dark Grains (Wheat) |
| Introduction |
| By-products of the grain distillery from
whisky, gin and vodka production. Available with and
without wheat solubles. Wheat is soaked to release the
starch reserves for fermentation. Often, some barley malt
is added to start the process, providing enzymes to
convert starch to sugar. The grain which remains alter
the liquor is removed is often called wet draff. This can
be pressed and dried with the left-over yeast syrups to
produce dark grains. |
| Origin |
| Mainly UK. |
| Nutritional Information |
| High in energy and protein which is partly
degradable. Contains digestible fibre at moderate levels
which makes it ideal for ruminants but less suitable for
non-ruminants Protein is partially rumen undegradable due
to the heat used during the manufacturing process. |
| Colour/Texture |
| Dark brown meal/pellets |
| Palatability |
| Good |
| Limits on Usage |
| High copper levels (150 ppm) mean it is
unsuitable for feeding to sheep. The free unsaturated oil
content should be noted when used in ruminant diets. |
