Turnips
Introduction
A mid season (Jul-Aug) or autumn (Sept-Dec) crop, providing a quantity of green feed when grass growth and/or quality is declining. It takes 10 weeks from sowing to feeding.
Origin
Usually grown in more northerly areas of Europe.
Nutritional Information
Usually strip grazed, allowing 30-35Kg/head daily. Cows are usually provided with a grass 'run back' area at the same time. 1 acre will last 100 cows for 1 week.
Colour/Texture
Grey/white fleshy tubers.
Palatability
Readily consumed.
Limits on Usage
Avoid soil contamination.
