TILLING ON TELEVISION

horizontal rule

The birth of a legend:

In 1984, London Weekend Television, in association with Channel Four, created two successful television series which were based on stories from the classic E.F.Benson "Mapp and Lucia" set of novels.

Set in the picturesque town of Tilling in Sussex, the 10 episodes featured Prunella Scales as the acidulous "Elizabeth Mapp" and Geraldine McEwan as the redoubtable "Emmeline Lucas", known to all and sundry as "Lucia". As Lucia's closest friend "Georgie Pillson", Nigel Hawthorne was considered perfect casting.

Most of the filming took place on location in Rye, Sussex, apart from house interiors, which were recreated at the London studios of London Weekend Television.
