Castle Eden Fruit Farm - PYO Strawberries
Strawberry picking is fun and these
strawberries are definitely worth the effort.
This is one of the few pick your own strawberry fields that grow
more than one sort of strawberry.
They grow Honeyoye (my favourite), Elsanta, Hapil, Eros (2nd favourite),
Alice and Florence. Plus two varieties new for 2011 - Darsalect
and Fanella (haven't tried either yet).
During the season they are open from 10am till about 6pm, depending
on the weather. If you are going late on, give them a ring first
to make sure they don't shut before you get there. The number
is 0780 291 0255
You'll find the strawberry field opposite Wynyard Woodland Park
(formerly the Castle Eden Walkway), Thorpe Thewles, Stockton-on-Tees,
Cleveland, TS21 3JG (for those who use a Sat Nav). They're easy
to get to from Stockton, Middlesbrough, Billingham and Darlington
areas as well South Durham, like us.
Their official address is - Castle Eden Fruit Farm, Castle Eden
Walkway, Thorpe Thewles.
It's behind the big Tesco Extra as you go out of Stockton towards
Bishop Auckland on the A177.
From Stockton, go past Tesco, take the 1st right across the dual
carrageway, just after the speed camera, then the 1st left up
the bank, on a single width road with passing places, only a few
100 yards. They are on the right hand side, towards the end of
the road, past the Walkway car park that's is on the left hand
side.
Coming from Bishop Auckland you take the first left after the
speed camera that's aimed on your side of the road.
It's only a mile or so from Tesco and I don't understand why anyone
would buy strawberries from a supermarket when these fresh ones
are so close.
If you don't have the time to pick your own strawberries, they
usually have some 'they picked earlier' for sale.
9/7/11 Sorry but they are now closed.Today
was the last day of the 2011 strawberry season :-(
I'll post here when the 2012 one opens.
John Wilkinson - Reclaimed Timber
John deals with reclaimed timber
and plywood off-cuts. He can even come up with firewood suitable
for burning in your home fire/stove etc if you need some.
I discovered him when I was looking for birch ply wood for the
wooden jigsaw puzzles I make.
He even let me go and pick out the pieces I wanted, which is a
big bonus for anyone using plywood for craft work - you know what
you want but it isn't easy explaining it to someone else.
Only don't ask for big sheets - apparently they aren't classed
as off-cuts.
Reclaimed timber covers all sorts of things so his timber stocks
do vary. It's worth a phone call, just to check if he has anything
in, suitabe for your needs. I bet he'll be cheaper than B&Q,
Hpmebase etc (none of them even stocked the sort of wood I wanted)
His unit is on Bracks Farm, Heighington,
between Newton Aycliffe and Darlington, Co Durham. Exit junction
59 off the A1M
Make sure you get directions from him - ones right to his door
and make note of them - farm tacks aren't a strong point of sat
navs. I know how to get there from here but not from any other
direction.
His number is 07949 503856 and when you've seen his workshop,
you'll understand why there isn't a landline number.
