I have recently 'adopted' a horse from Redwings Horse Sanctuary. This means I subscribe each year to help pay towards her keep. Bonnie is a beautiful Shire horse with an unusual black roan coat, this means black with specks of white. She was rescued from Norwich horse sale in October 1987 when she was just six months old along with her mother Jessie. Sadly after spending many happy years together at Redwings, Jessie died in the summer of 1997.
Being a Shire Jessie is one of the tallest horses at Redwings, she stands 17.1 hands, her breed is a descendant of the Old English Black Horse which stemmed from the great horses which carried medieval knights into battle. It is hard to believe that Bonnie's ancestors were so bold and fearless when today Shire's are often called Gentle Giants due to their docile temperament. They have though inherited their strength which was channeled into working for man in productive ways, nowadays horse power has been replaced by machinery and these horses are not seen so often.
Shire horses need a lot of care and attention and are expensive to feed, Bonnies previous owner couldn't afford to feed her through the winter and she was destined for the slaughter house until her and her mother were bought by Redwings.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is in Norfolk, England, they care for over a thousand horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules. Their aim is to rescue horses, ponies, donkeys and mules from neglect and slaughter and provide them with a caring home for the rest of their days.
