WATER POLO NEWS

Sunday October 14th

The newly formed Boldmere Orca's Youth Water Polo team entertained Newport in their opening Midland League Youth Water Polo fixture at Wyndley Leisure centre.

The Boldmere lads overwhelmed their visitors in the opening period with Michael Foulds leading the way with 3 goals, supported by 2 goals from Andy Jones and Sam Jenkins, with Nick Herbert winning a penalty decision which he dispatched with ease.

The second period saw the visitors mount a comeback out scoring the Orca's by 3 goals to 2, this left the Home team with a 10-4 half time advantage. In the final two periods the Orca's regained control with Ben West scoring 3 goals, the visitors only managing to beat goalkeeper Joel Rowley with 2 goals, leaving the home team victors by 15-6. Although not on the score sheet Chris Walker, Istvan Nemeshanji and Jack Bryant turned in good performances. The Orca's coach Chris Hook was able to give first outings to Graham Bates, Mathew Foulds and Matthew Kieghts and 11year old Toby Hook delighted the large crowd by scoring the final goal.

Orcas Youth v Solihull

What a thriller!!!!! Orcas Youth were entertained, enervated & enthused at the "cliff-hanger " at Solihull in the Midland Youth League. The Orcas took an early lead courtesy of home- grown;Chris Walker, only for the home side to hit back with 3 goals. The 2nd quarter was even with both sides scoring; Michael Foulds & Ben West for the Orcas account. The final Quarter was a test of who really wanted the win most..the Orcas having to overcome a dubious penalty with a minute to play & 8-7 down. Andy Jones saved the day with Michael Foulds putting the icing on the cake. The spectators shouted, cheered & digested their finger nails, before journeying home for a well earned beverage.

Sunday November 11th

The Orca's squad suffered disappointment at the hands of current league Champions Warley Wasps as they fell to a 17-12 defeat.  The Orca's team were hit by late withdrawals from key players due to illness and injuries.  The game opened with the Warley team taking full advantage of a makeshift Orca's team and raced into a 7-2 first quarter lead. Orca's goalkeeper Chris Walker has little opportunity to stem the goal flow.

However, the home team fought back with great determination to restrict the rampant Warley Wasp youngsters. Two fine goals from Nick Herbert, well supported by Andy Jones and Ben West kept the Orca's in the game. Further goals from Sam Jenkins and Toby Hook raised the spirits of the Orca's players, with strong performances coming from new player Graham Bates and Istvan Nemeshanji that ensured that Warley had to fight all the way for their win.

Orcas water Polo squad is looking to recruit more 12/15 years boys and girls for the youth team. Are you a strong swimmer who enjoys taking part in team events? Come along on a Thursday night at 8.15pm and ask to be directed to David Geiss, by the diving bay. You can have a go to see if you like it!

GALA HI-LIGHTS

Diddy League
ORCAS A produced a 2nd place and two first places in the three league rounds which is the best performance in recent memory.
The newly formed ORCAS B are building in strength and experience in the 4th division. These swimmers are performing a vital role in the club and with regular conscienscious training and improving P.B's will soon be reaping the benefits.
In the 1st round Orcas B were finding their flippers. Best performances; 3rd places for Stacey Pearsall;fly, Katy Stanger; back, Steven Taylor; back
In the second round for Orcas B there were impressive debut swims for Nicole Holmes, Mia Scott and Tom Cooper. Helen Fisher was best placed in 2nd in the back and 3rd in breast stroke, Katy Stanger in 3rd in back and Charlotte Davies strong swim; 4th in fly
The numbers of swimmers turning out to the B galas is disappointing for the team as relays have had to be abandoned. Our primary objective is to provide opportunities for as many swimmers as possible.

After a strong 2nd place in round 1, Orcas A had a superb win in round 2 with P.B's and club records falling like skittles. Wins for Louis Yates in back, Beth Woodford in fly and free ( Midland District time),

Lisa Butterworth in back.
The 3rd round win for Orcas A; brought wins for:Jessica Huddx2,

Ashley wants to go up in style however, and is targeting 1st place and the magnificent 3rd Division trophy

We want our supporters to "Raise The Roof" for our brilliant team. If you have anything with an Orca's logo, banners, inflatables, photographs etc, please bring them along!!.
MILLFIELD SWIM CAMP

The annual Swim camp at Millfield School takes place from 26-29th July.
In 2000, 17 swimmers attended, but this number has risen to 37 for this year's event. Ashley uses the Camp to perfect swimmers technique, get swimmers used to training and competing in a 50m pool (good preparation for Warwickshire Championships). Ashley also uses the camp to set swimmers goals for the remainder of the year.
The emphasis of the camp is for the swimmers to work hard, but have lots of fun (or else) and build up team spirit for the forthcoming Nuneaton League Final and the three Speedo League galas.
The evening itinerary includes a Tenpin Bowling competition (Friday) and a visit to the Cinema (Saturday). There will also be lots of other "Non-Swimming" activities such as Pool, Tennis, Football, Athletics and much much more!!!!!!!!!
The club would like to thank helpers Ray Woodford, Lois Hudd, Shirley & Derek Wigley, Ruth Yates, Julia Carter and Dave Butterworth, who will chaperone children, plan activities and act as chauffeurs.
Special thanks to Doug Macdonald for providing the minibus.

Spring 2001

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR ORCAS as Double Olympic Medallist Nick Gillingham hosts a session.
This was geared towards Orcas squad swimmers in preparation for the Warwickshire Championships. Our own resident chief coach, Ashley Cox was given a well earned break but took the time to evaluate the session; The time was limited to one session (Thurs evening) and Nick spent time with each of the three squads. Most aspects were covered and Nick shared some handy tips on strokes and competing in galas. This was clearly a benefit to all the swimmers who had the opportunity to take part. This has also been a benefit to Boldmere Swimming Club and we wish to express our appreciation to Nick, who is the President of City Of Birmingham Swimming Club for dedicating his time.

Welcome to Trista Vallentine who has joined us in January in a coaching capacity. Trista has brought a wealth of coaching experience from her Australian roots. We hope that our swimmers will make her very welcome and show their appreciation by working hard in her sessions and showing her what they are capable of! Ashley and Trista will be working together with the Orcas squads and will alternate between the groups. We are very grateful to John Bates who has tirelessly bridged the gap between the teaching and coaching side whilst there was a void. John is long over-due a few early nights!

Water Polo;
In order to extend the variety of water-based activities to our swimmers, we are very pleased to report that we plan to merge with Sutton water polo club in April 01. Many of our swimmers are already members of the water polo club and are already enjoying training and competitive events. Training is on a Sunday night at Wyndley, further details from the desk. Please leave your name and contact no in the message book.

NEW NEWTOWN SESSION:

We are pleased to announce that a new session at Newtown pool has been acquired to enhance our pool-time availability for competitive swimming. This session has been negotiated on behalf of the club to compensate in part, for the loss of the use of the championship coaching session on a Wednesday at Stechford, which has been replaced by Club-Link. Ashley has invited swimmers who are currently swimming three or four sessions and are showing a keen interest and working hard in sessions. The charge per session is £1.50 payable in advance every ten weeks.

CLUB-LINK
This is Birmingham's new initiative to develop club swimmers to a higher level. The coaching of these sessions has been awarded to Perry Beeches to run on behalf of all the city's clubs. These sessions are charged independently of club fees and are open to all club swimmers.

Following several complaints;

To comply with club rules, please note that clothes should not be left in the changing cubicles at Erdington but stored in poolside lockers. If any swimmer should have problems finding an empty cubicle please bring it to the attention of one of the swimming instructors who will remove clothes to a locker.

Similarly can all swimmers be courteous when using the shower facilities; girls please take no longer than 5 minutes in the shower to allow the boys a chance. We are an equal opportunities Swimming Club!!!!

MILLFIELD SWIM CAMP;
This is planned for 26th-29th July and is proving even more popular than last year. Last year the party of 25 including 6 helpers were accommodated in one house, the larger party this year may require two!

Winter 1999

Christmas Disco:  The disco held on 11th December1999 was a resounding success!

Thanks to Keith Evanson for organising and to those committee members and family members who helped on the night.

AGM notification: As notified separately by Club Secretary in accordance with the club constitution. This will take place on Wednesday 9th February at 7.15pm at Wyndley Leisure Centre.  There are numerous posts vacant on the management committee.  In addition other jobs are awaiting volunteers.

Competitive Swimming: Do we have any Junior (9 - 12yr) or Senior swimmers interested in gala competition.  To be able to compete in league galas they will need ASA registration which needs to be done ASAP Contact Ray Woodford.

Gala fixtures for 2000:  see notice-board and front desks on swim nights.

Resignation of Chief Coach Stuart Sanders: Prior to leaving at end January 2000, Stuart has  produced comprehensive teaching guidelines.  Aiming to improve swimmers’ performance and gala results.

On behalf of the swimmers and the management committee, Stuart was presented with gifts: Compact metallic clock radio, Calvin Klein pen set and super stop-watch.  (You may recollect the collection which took place last year!)

Situations  vacant:

To continue with the improved development of the club we are advertising for a new Chief Coach.  However following the disappointing response that we received when it was last advertised (at great expense) we now recognise that there is a shortage of qualified ASA Club Coaches.  It is with this in mind that the club will be sending two of its teachers on the next available Club Coach course (March/April).  We still have an advert on the Institute of Swimming Teachers and Coaches Internet site and occasionally we get responses including one from a couple living in South Africa looking to relocate to the UK!

While we wait and see who applies for the job as Chief Coach, Ashley Cox will be our acting Chief Coach and has already issued a Training Cycle for the senior swimmers including the following statement.

Guidance to Swimmers:

“When training a positive and professional attitude is asked of all swimmers. Being on the poolside early and ready to swim with working equipment (goggles adjusted etc.).  This will not only benefit your own swimming progress, but will also set a good example for the younger swimmers in the club.  Self discipline is an essential ingredient of a good swimmer.”

This is not an unreasonable request and we hope it has your full support.

Swimming equipment (Fins, Kick Boards and Pull Buoys etc.) club members now have the choice of two suppliers.  Mail order from Swim Shop, if items are ordered via John Bates you will receive a 10% discount off the catalogue price.

Individuals (or a group) can place orders direct with Allens of Kingsbury (Club Bonus Scheme) and receive a 10% discount when spending over £20.  Catalogues and more information are available from the front desk.

Swimathon

Together with colleagues at his work John Bates is involved in raising funds for two charities.  One of the events that will be taking place is a Swimathon where we will be aiming to “Swim the Channel”.  Obviously to make it a success he needs swimmers, and lots of them.  The event will be for everyone (including parents) who can swim a minimum of 25 metres. Sponsorship is useful but not essential, just come along and help them reach their target.  A £1 donation towards the hire of the pool would be appreciated, pay on the day.  Erdington Swimming Pool, Saturday 12th February 5.15p.m – 7.00 p.m.

If any parents would like to help keeping track of the distances swam, poolside organisation etc. or if you should require any further details pick up a letter from the front desk.  You will be able to register on the day, but to help with the organisation please add your name to the list ASAP

New Pool Proposals

Over the past few months Ashley Cox, John Bates, Stuart Saunders and David Heilbronn have looked at the existing pool layout and swimming group progression.  A new layout has been devised that will be an improvement.  With the limited water time available options were few.  The new swimming group’s include objectives and structured progression through the club and affect everyone.  The new layout only affects Wyndley and includes the purchase of lane ropes, we have tried to keep swimming time changes to a minimum.  All parents and swimmers will be kept informed of any changes, with a possible trial run to make sure that it works, look out for notices on the desk or on the notice board at Wyndley.  The new proposals will be available for viewing at the forthcoming AGM.

Help

Help is always needed on the poolside (taking registers, passing on messages, collecting equipment and teaching) any swimmers / parents would like to help or want to know more about forthcoming ASA Assistant Teachers courses, for anyone aged 16+, contact John Bates.

Autumn 1999

COMMITTEE UPDATE

The committee is striving to progress in the following areas:

  1. Improving teacher to swimmer ratios and supporting teachers to update qualifications as appropriate.  We aim to recruit more qualified instructors to supplement our poolside staff.

  2. Improving poolside hygiene.

  3. Regular communications e.g. Newsletters and notices to swimmers and parents, availability of  members for informal discussions at Erdington and Wyndley pool reception areas.

  4. Re-structured awards system.

  5. Re-organisation of lessons into widths, in order for improved stroke technique teaching and closer supervision of swimmers progress, under the guidance of Chief Coach Stuart Sanders.

  6. Fuller gala fixture program.

  7. Club event program.

  8. General improvements to the, efficiency, atmosphere and professionalism of the organisation.

Please read The Secretaries 12 point plan on the notice board at Wyndley and available at Erdington on request.

We hope you are seeing evidence of this and welcome your comments and to hear your concerns.

We continue to support the collaboration with Triple S with regard to swimmers aged 12 + who wish to undertake joint training and participate at a competitive level at galas.  Boldmere currently offer the Monday session from 8.15pm for this venture.  All visiting swimmers are asked to give in their name at the desk.  This arrangement is coming up for review and we will up-date you shortly.

John King has given notice of his impending resignation from the club as instructor and committee chairman.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank John for his tireless enthusiasm on the poolside as teacher and in an official capacity, we will miss him!

Diane Redman has given notice of her resignation as Wyndley Secretary & Deputy Chairman.  The club wishes to express their thanks for the many years of support.

Kate Reilly has now retired from her role as Team manager, however you will see her, if you don’t hear her first, on the poolside!

We will advise you in due course what the management of the team arrangements will be for the forthcoming  year.  In the mean time the remaining members of the management team will continue in their former roles:

Lois Hudd (9year team, 13+ team and general duties), Ray Woodford (Fixtures Manager, 10 Year team and general duties), Keith Evanson(11year team and general duties), Lyn Eshelby (12year team  and general duties).  Stuart Sanders, Chief coach is looking forward to taking an active role in Team Management/ selection.  We would emphasize that the enormity of the duties is very much reduced by the team approach.  We wish to continue with as much support as possible from parents and older siblings in relation to: time keeping, recording, chaperoning and audible support…Thank you for all your support thus far!

SWIMMERS NEWS - CONGRATULATIONS TO:

Oooooooooh ORCAS!   What a great day out!

The swimmers have proven their capabilities and with continued attendance and conscientious effort, at as many sessions as possible, we know you can do it next Year!

We look forward to introducing aspiring competitive swimmers born in 1991 into the Diddy Squad ready for next year’s competitive season.  Stuart Sanders will approach you regarding this.

We also need to increase our strength and depth in the squad and look to include more keen boys born in 1988 &1989 and girls born in 1990.  In the first instance please approach your age group representative, if you are interested.

DIDDY SQUAD CONTINUED…….

In all age groups: boys and girls, there is always room for additional swimmers who are showing good progress in respect of stroke technique and sprint speed.  We often rely on young swimmers to swim-up, in order to maintain strength in relay teams.

Summer 1999

INSTRUCTOR VACANCIES

The committee have agreed in principle to the introduction of payments to instructors within the club. This decision has been very difficult as it has been the longstanding tradition of the club for it’s instructors to give their time voluntarily. The club would like to take this opportunity to extend it’s gratitude to those instructors who have given their time freely and to those who will continue to do so. However it has become necessary to offer payments in line with similar organisations in order to recruit much needed new instructors. It is felt that this incentive will boost our ratio of pool-side staff to swimmers. We are confident that this will meet with the approval of members and parents.

We are currently recruiting for the post of Assistant to Chief Coach.

Club "checking in process"

An evaluation of the registration process has been undertaken by the club secretary and Erdington and Wyndley registration secretaries. It has been concluded that the process of checking membership card numbers against a number-grid is fruitful, as it serves two purposes: to monitor the swimmers attending are paid-up members and to monitor the numbers of swimmers attending. At the end of each session the numbers’ register is cross-referenced against names register, to maintain a meaningful record.

ADDITIONAL POOL-TIME AVAILABILITY

The secretary has assisted the chief coach and instructor to seek an additional training venue for an additional weekend session. This will assist to enable the progression of lesson swimmers into coaching groups in preparation for Diddy League Galas and other competitions. This additional training will be offered in the first instance, to swimmers in the 9&10 year age groups who are showing competitive potential. There will be an additional charge attached to these sessions, to be advised.

LANE/ GROUP RE-ORGANISATION

Further re-organisation of swimmers is in progress regarding progression of swimmers into and within coaching groups and re-direction of swimmers who wish to continue leisure swimming. Older swimmers (aged 12 and over) with a commitment or interest in competitive swimming may remain within the coaching groups, with the agreement of the Chief Coach and Chief Instructor. Any clarification or concern regarding this process can be sought directly from Stuart Sanders: Chief Coach or John Bates: Chief Instructor.

OFFICIALS TRAINING COURSE

We are very pleased that a number of our committee together with members, parents are undergoing detailed training to become pool-side officials. We are grateful to Eamon Hamilton, Chairman of SSS Swimming Club for running this training. Thanks also to Kath Beacham and Sally Taylor for organising this.

POOL-SIDE HYGIENE

We are very concerned that the pool-side hygiene, particularly at Erdington pool is poor. To address this concern the Club Secretary has raised the issue to Erdington pool management. We seek your support to improve the standard by bringing a change of indoor shoes when entering the pool-side at either Erdington or Wyndley. We are also aiming to introduce the loan of shoe covers, to assist in this.

GALA/ COMPETITIVE NEWS

CONGRATULATIONS!

OUR DIDDY SQUAD HAVE REACHED The Nuneaton diddy league FINALS TO BE HELD ON 11TH SEPTEMBER 1999 AT WOLVERHAMPTON BATHS.

The finals, team will be notified individually, prior to posting on the notice-board. We aim to field the strongest possible team, with the most efficient swimmers being asked to compete in 1or 2 individual events plus relays. All other swimmers selected will be nominated as either a reserve, for 1or more relay swims, plus individual events as appropriate. Our most powerful swimmers in each age group will be nominated to swim in the butterfly events, in addition to their individual strongest stroke and relays.

WE MUST EMPHASIZE THAT THE AIM IS TO SCORE AS MANY TEAM POINTS AS POSSIBLE!

LOGO COMPETITION

We ran a competition to decide the Diddy Squad logo for the finals and thereafter. The Logo chosen incorporated the Boldmere rose and a whale (Orca) above it. Thus giving the squad name the Boldmere Orca's. Congratulations to Beth Woodford, your prize will be presented shortly. All other entrants will receive a consolation prize.

This design will be incorporated on a commemorative gala hat and T-shirt for all finalists. (Individual hat purchases at £3.50 please) The club is purchasing a full-kit consisting of Team T-Shirt and contrasting shorts, these will belong to the club. However it will be possible to order individual T-shirts in the near future.

PERSONAL BEST NIGHT

Congratulations to all swimmers who took part. Those of you who have entered a timed swim at Wyndley for the first time have recorded a Personal Best. In addition to those of you who have improved on your time from the Cup and Trophy Gala or All Round Championship will have swum a "P.B" .

Please take note of your times from the Notice-Board at Wyndley or the desk at Erdington.

FORTHCOMING GALAS

Please keep an eye at the desk and notice-board. In addition to the Diddy League fixtures for the coming year, Ray Woodford has secured places at invitation galas. We are also intending to enter the Mercian and Leicester leagues, in order to cater for our very competitive 12 year olds, who complete their Diddy League competition this year, plus 13’s and above!

We will continue to collaborate with SSS for galas involving 12 year olds and above, in order to ensure both clubs can field a full strength team at each event. We have two successful joint outings with "SSS" under our belts: A second place at Wolverhampton and a Third place at Hinckley ( thanks also to Kingsbury Aquarius for their guest swimmers)

Spring 1999

Boldmere Swimming Club would like to pay tribute to Mrs. Barbara Smith, who died recently. Barbara played a valuable role in the club with many years of devoted service to the club and to swimming generally. Her own father Mr. Fred Brown, before her was instrumental in swimming development in Sutton and posed for the swimming statue now inside Wyndley pool reception area. We acknowledge the passing away of Barbara and recognise her part in forming the history of Boldmere Swimming Club.

Summary of AGM held on 3rd March 1999

The AGM brought mixed news: Stuart Sanders handed in his resignation as Chief Coach and Instructor Elva Everitt gave notice that she was leaving due to moving house in May. The good news being that a new Management committee was elected, see list on Notice Board. It was acknowledged that the new committee and existing committee would need to rely on much support from within and from volunteer parents in order to move the club forward within a positive framework. The committee agreed to further discuss the future direction of the club and re-consider proposals previously made by "Triple S".

The collective needs of all club swimmers were agreed as of uppermost importance. (For further detailed account of AGM please ask to see a copy of the AGM minutes)

STOP PRESS!

We are pleased to confirm that Stuart Sanders has decided to remain with us in the capacity as Chief Coach. Thank you to all those swimmers and parents who contributed towards leaving gifts, as you will appreciate we were not aware that Stuart was able to stay until the time of the presentation. As chairman, John King indicated at that time, we will keep the gifts in safe - keeping until such a time arises where it will be appropriate to give them. We hope that this will be acceptable to all those who made donations.

As the vacancy for a replacement coach had been advertised it is felt that any applicants will be considered in the capacity of assistant Coach.

COMMITTEE NEWS:

The committee has agreed by majority to collaborate with Triple S on joint initiatives for competitive swimmers in the 12+ age group. A sub-committee met to agree a basis for the co-operation and then met with "Triple S" chairman Eammon Hamilton to negotiate the terms of the arrangement. It was agreed that Team Managers from both clubs would meet to discuss the plan for a joint team to go out on the 15th May at Bromsgrove.

PLEASE MAKE KNOWN TO KATE REILLY IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE INCLUDED: Ages12YOURSELF, 14 and Open.

We are presently recruiting new instructors for lesson teaching and are inviting applicants holding a current A.S.A Teacher’s Certificate.

We aim to improve communications with members:

A Boldmere notice-board is due to be fixed on the wall at Wyndley Pool shortly, and one to follow at Erdington. Thanks to Sally Taylor for your hard work!

A regular Newsletter is planned interspersed with Gala Newsletters as appropriate. Thanks to Ray Woodford for interim Gala News!

We are developing a Handbook for all new swimmers to out-line all the different functions of the club and to inform swimmers as to standards set, in order to advance within the structure. Thanks to Paula Mellors, John Bates and co. for all the ground work!

A revised Award scheme is being planned to include recognition of achievement: distance, skills awards and gala participation.

POOL-SIDE HYGIENE (or lack of it!)

We are deeply concerned regarding the soiling from outside foot-wear on the pool-side at Erdington. In light of this we would respectively request that parents attending to spectate or collect children from the pool-side, change into indoor shoes or take off out-door shoes. This is for the protection of our swimmers i.e. our children.

CLUB COLOURS

We would ask that all swimmers representing the club at galas wear a black costume/trunks (white or red trimming is acceptable) and a Boldmere hat (available from the desk at Wyndley and Erdington)

LESSON SWIMMERS

Chief Instructor, John Bates continues to review swimmers’ progress with the appropriate lane instructors, in order to move stronger swimmers into the next group. Those interested in gala competition will be encouraged to work towards joining the coaching groups with Stuart Sanders. Please discuss concerns regarding your child’s progress with their instructor and John Bates.

SYNCHRO SWIMMERS

Good Luck with the forthcoming exam!

POOL-SIDE OFFICIALS: Kath Beauchamp is looking for interested parents to join a training program.

GALA NEWS

DIDDY League Round 1: At Stetchford we finished in a respectable fourth place. We had two first placed swimmers: Beth Woodford(x2) and Sarah Evanson . We had free-style relay wins for the: 9 and under girls; Lisa Butterworth, Emma Gould, Jessica Hudd and Karen Wigley. 12 and under boys; Alex Badger, Graham Bates, Anthony Underwood and Chris Walker. 12 and under girls; Danielle Coton, Catherine Fisher, Lisa Martin and Erin Simms. We also had 6 second place and third place swims. Regrettably we had 5 disqualifications* on the night, attributed to gala inexperience and enthusiasm.

*We are confident that with dedicated pre-gala training sessions, to practice racing starts, take-overs and turns etc that we can reduce the occurrence* at future events!

(Apologies to those who attended for the first of these planned sessions which regrettably did not take place)

CHEADLE 24TH APRIL 1998 (please see separate Gala News sheet and Sutton News for full reports)

An invitation gala where we swam against formidable opposition. We recorded 20 Personal Best times! Congratulations to: Danielle Coton, Chris Walker, Emmy Hudd x2, Joseph Hudd, Duncan Mc Donald x3, Lisa martin x2, Laura Eshelby x2, Charlotte Florence, Alex Badger, Bethany Edwards x2, Caroline Wright, Peter Gould, Erin Sims and Graham Bates. Regrettably we had to call upon some swimmers to "swim up" one or two age groups due to illness (Get Well Soon Sarah!) and non-attendance on the night. Again we had 6 disqualifications* and finished in sixth place.

TIME TRIALS: These took Place on the 26th April at Erdington Pool. The event was reasonably well attended and proved to be very useful in evaluating the particular strengths of individual swimmers. Thanks to all those who helped on the night and to those who took part. Special congratulations to Lucy Barstow and Glen Corkin who are in the 8 year old age group and keen contenders for next year’s team!

We aim to make this a regular event and will keep you informed.

We are very confident that we have the makings of a successful Gala Squad! Congratulations to all swimmers who took part in all of these events

FORTHCOMING GALA: DIDDY LEAGUE ROUND 2 at Newtown 0n 7th May 1999.

This is our Home Gala and we are responsible for the staffing of officials and helpers on the night. Please speak to Team Manager, Kate Reilly if you are able to help out.

In order to strengthen our position in the league table and to minimise the risk of disqualifications on the night , we have selected the team for the Diddy League fixtures only, using tighter criteria: The five strongest boy and girl swimmers from each age group form the basis of the team, from whom the strongest individual stroke swimmers will be selected (up to 2 individual events per swimmer) All swimmers selected will swim in relay events appropriate to their strengths. We are hopeful for full attendance on the night and a good result!

All other gala fixtures will give consideration to a wider base of swimmers who are demonstrating enthusiasm and improved performance during training.

If you missed out on selection for the gala this time, DON’T DESPAIR! Keep up the good work! Speak to John Bates about the possibility of increasing your sessions and ask about Championship Coaching, come along to Time Trials next time and prove yourself! - Next date to be advised.

See You at the Pool,

LYN ESHELBY, on behalf of your Committee.
