Roman Britain cannot easily be studied in isolation from the rest of the empire, and so I have listed here a few references which deal with the wider, cosmopolitan aspects of Roman civilisation and the roots of the culture from which the ruling class of Roman Britain were drawn. The corpus of published work on Roman civilisation is vast and growing, and only a small proportion of it is written in English, so a comprehensive insight into the subject requires some ability in at least two other modern languages. For those without academic affiliation, the best way to keep abreast of 'what's new' in the field is probably to make frequent visits to the on-line booksellers. Most of these also have facilities to notify you by email of new publications in a chosen frame of reference. There are a couple of excellent on-line bibliographies dealing with the Roman military machine (listed on the website page) and I should be grateful for any pointers to other specialised bibliographies which are actively maintained. The brevity of the topic listing on the left is down to my desire to keep it as just an ancillary section of the site. The classification is expanded to some degree on the Site Map. |
