The civitas capital of the Brigantes, of uncertain foundation but presumed to have formed from the vicus of a fort for which there is as yet no evidence ??

Cirencester, Glos. CORINIVM Corinium Dobunnorum
Became th the civitas capital of the Dobunni (in prefernce to the original pre-Roman site at nearby Bagendon) from around AD60 and probably developed from the vicus around an early Roman fort of AD 43/44. The town lay at the junction of Ermine Street and the Foss Way and was also the western terminus of Akeman Street so was likely an important trading centre thoughout the Roman occupation.
Chichester, West Sussex Noviomagus Regnorum
Colchester, Essex CAMVLODVNVM Colonia Victricensis Camulodunensium [Bib]
Originally the tribal centre (oppidum) of the Trinovantes, Camulodunum was where the emporer Claudius is said to have claimed victory over the British in AD 43, and for some years was the Roman administrative centre of the province (though this function seems to have been moved to London at a fairly early date). The settlement was made a Colonia in 49AD and in 60 AD suffered almost complete destruction at the hands of the British in revolt under Boudicca. The site has received considerable attention from archaeologists and historians, most recently under the auspices of the Colchester Archaeological Trust.
