| In addition to the usual primary sources quoted by historians there is a
considerable amount of information about the Roman presence in Britain to be derived from
inscriptions, - and not just the monumental sort. Epigraphy really includes any written
record of the period, whether on stone, metal, tile and brick, leather and wooden tablets
etc., all these sources provide scholars with important clues and are generally held to be
more factual than the accounts of contemporary writers. The Roman Inscriptions of
Britain by R G Collingwood and R P Wright, now extensively revised
and published in several parts, remains the definitive work and is listed in a
section of it's own below. The annual issues of the journal Britannia also contain notices of newly discovered inscriptions and revised interpretations of old ones. . |
