In Amsterdam it was quite hard to find a coffee shop where you could smoke and maybe drink some beer or ordinary coffee with it. But in Old Style that is possible, so it's great for going on first morning coffee and also smoke your first morning joint. But I didn't like one thing. That day when we were there it was really sunny and we were sitting outside. We were drinking coffee and smoking, but after few minutes when we weren't even smoke till the end, the waiter came and told us that is not allowed to smoke outside and that we have to go inside or throw it away. But instead of that little inconvenience it was very nice. Two of us were there on the one available hour of our flight change at Schipol. This place being only a short walk from Central Station, we called in for the menu, but were told they didn't sell, though we could buy elsewhere (just round the corner there's a couple of coffeeshops) and smoke it in Old Style. Apparently some bloke had walked in the place for a smoke and a coffee. Next thing, the place was raided and cocaine found on the bloke. Coffeeshop loses licence. Doesn't sound much like fair play. Anyway, as had been suggested to us, we bought elsewhere and went back - and had an extremely pleasant hour on Orange Bud. The man bought us our Cokes (no pun intended) and became a lifelong friend by the time we left. Great place, lovely atmosphere (+ dead handy for quick stopovers). It is true has lost its licence but it remains a great place to have a smoke. I would recommend taking in a gramme from Piccasos and sitting with a coffee or beer. The folk are chilled and you will have a great time. I was looking forward to seeing the lady who was there in April, It was obviously distressing for her losing the licence but she was carrying on with bravery and fortitude! I have to tell you that "Old Style" is not a coffeeshop anymore. The seller told me she lost her license for selling weed. I have visited cafe Old Style too many times. It's a really great place that combines excellent grass and hash with alcohol and GOOD tunes. Dark, old pub atmosphere (even in the day) with candles on the tables. Mostly all high bar stool seating, either at the long bar or several tables along the opposite wall. There is a nice low table in the front window that is fairly comfortable if your lucky enough to grab it. Dealer is in a bunker in the back, holed up with his goodies. I really recommend this shop, especially for the first time mature American who is wanting to ease into the whole coffeeshop scene. The whole atmosphere is comfortable and very familiar, which can help keep you upright on your barstool in the event you bite off more than you can chew. On my last visit I bought a gram of SuperKaliMist that was fantastic, had 3 pints, and was feeling so good I kissed the pirate statue (just outside) on the mouth as I left. I've still got a sore on my lip that won't heal. Don't kiss the pirate. I was last in Old Style in 98, but it was by far my favorite, the manager was very entertained by me and even bought me a coffee, I found the bud to be fresh, the atmosphere warm and comfortable and the staff very honest about the Dutch product. I hope Old Style lives on for some time! Of the 20+ coffeeshops that I visited, this is by far my favorite. The bud and hash are fantastic but more importantly the manager was VERY cool and most helpful. The music they were playing was great too. This is the first and last place that I will visit when in A'dam. This place should not be missed. My favorite. Folks there were very friendly and pleasant, the product was very good and the vibe cool. Low key decor and excellent music. I think it was just the general ambiance of an old pub that made me feel comfortable. Once inside everyone was friendly and the prices and quality were fair. Old Style is open again. After problems with hard drug dealers and the police advising the council negatively, Old Style in Martellsgraght is back.......I spent Queens day there and their '''charas manali' is just something else. Old Style closed yesterday - sign says go to Rockerij in Singel 8, the building looks unsafe at old style. I would like to put my stamp of approval on one in particular, "Cafe Old Style". I can't remember the street but if you walk out of Central Station and bear to the right you can't miss it across the street from the Crown plaza. The product was good, quality and the prices were most reasonable. The staff was very friendly and helpful. This is an excellent place for the 30s and 40s crowd.
