Painted Lines

She stood by the side of the road, following it with her eyes as it flowed calmly into the grey horizon. She knew that although it seemed smooth and unruptured to the eye, beneath the surface were hidden currents which could drag her under in a second. Her mother had drowned on this road a year before.

In the distance, an unfamiliar voice cried "Carrie....Carrie...come with us". She took a deep breath and stepped off the kerb. In the few seconds it took her to die in the torrent, she remembered her name was Nadia.
