Composition
As a composer, Neil is influenced rhythmically by Stravinsky and Bartok and harmonically by Schnittke. The first piece of Schnittke he heard was a cello sonata and this inspired him to write his own cello sonata. Neil also enjoys writing in the style of the classical masters. At St Johns, Smith Square and at a recent Purcell Room debut, Neil performed one of his own piano pieces, Black. He has recently premiered a set of duet variations on Beethovens, Ode to Joy, written in the style of Beethoven. Neil has a number of compositions available for performance including piano sonatas, preludes, a cello sonata, guitar pieces, violin pieces, a trumpet concerto, songs, string quartets, a symphony, pieces for flute/alto and piano, flute oboe and clarinet, flute violin and piano and a ballet. Neil is also very happy to undertake commissions. "A creative mind of considerable accomplishment" "Thoroughly absorbing, it gave
the overall impression of accelerated Skryabinism, very much the product of a
pianist-composer, particularly when bearing in mind its concern with colour"
