Crossword No.454 Christmas 1980
Clues are of four types. 1 Normal cryptic (N). 2 Misprints (M). Each clue contains a misprint of one letter only, occurring always in the definition part of the clue. Answers are to appear in the diagram correctly spelt. 3 Definition and Letter Mixture (DLM). Each clue contains both a definition (one word or more) and a mixture of the letters (beginning at the beginning or ending at the end of a word in the clue) of the required solution. Either definition or letter-mixture, which do not overlap, may come first. 4 Theme and Variations (TV) Four theme-words have a common link (a word of nine letters). Each of them has two variations connected to it in the same way, though the connection between theme-word and variations is different in each case. Unchecked letters in answers to TV clues (four of which are proper names) may be arranged as BURST IN LARYNX.
