Spot the Theme by Ximenes

13 words in the diagram are connected into a series by a certain theme, which has to be discovered by cumulative evidence.  10 of them are clued in italics.  The other three, 1ac., 1 dn. and 3, are not clued, nor, among the other words, are 10 and 14; this is done to make a complete solution of the NW corner impossible - except by guesswork against very long odds - until the theme is discovered:  its discovery will enable that corner to be filled in with no possible alternatives.
