Train passing through a cutting near Coldred on the East Kent Railway, on its way to the Guilford Colliery.

The land in these parts is chalk downland with a thin covering of soil, which can be seen by the stark whiteness of the freshly excavated cutting.

From an original oil painting by John Abbott.  Reproduced by kind permission of the artist.

View looking towards Coldred Church from the direction of Shepherdswell, showing the East Kent Railway in the middle distance.  The train is heading towards the cutting and the bridge under the Coldred - Eythorne road.  In the far distance, to the left of the church, can be seen one of the chimneys of the Guilford Colliery.

From an original oil painting by John Abbott.  Reproduced by kind permission of the artist.
