The Aztecs had a RELIGIOUS calendar and an SOLAR calendar.

The RELIGIOUS year had 20 days and 13 numbers.  (260 days)

The SOLAR year had 18 months each 20 days long and 5 spare days. (365 days)

Archaeologists worked out how these calendars worked by studying artefacts such as the sunstones. Here's a sunstone for you to study.

It was during the reign of the 6th Aztec Emperor in 1479 that this stone was carved and dedicated to the principal Aztec god: the sun.

It weighs almost 25 tons, has a diameter of just under 12 feet, and a thickness of 3 feet.

On December 17th, 1760 the stone was discovered, buried in the "Zocalo" (the main square) of Mexico City.
