What should be in my CONFIG.SYS file?

Please view my Notices page before viewing this area, it is not complete!
This is work in progress.

This is just a basic list of some of the things that you should have in your CONFIG.SYS, you may require more depending on your system.

If you want to use expanded memory emulation and have extended memory and high memory available then you will probably need to load HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE. For a fuller description see How do I set up expanded and extended memory?

With the above two files loaded you can add the line "DOS = HIGH" to save conventional memory.

If you have a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM then you should load the driver here, see How do I access the CD-ROM? for details of doing this.

If you aren't in the US then you'll need a country statement as described in Why do dates and times apear in the wrong format?

If you wish to change the colours or number of lines on the screen, then you should load ANSI.SYS, refer to ANSI.SYS in the DOS Reference section to see how this is done.

Trawled this site and still can't find the solution to your problem?
If so I highly recommend The DOS Board.
It has several good techies waiting to answer your questions and I hang around there a lot too.
