His book informs us that he was born in Georgia in 1838, quite possibly on the 12 October, and was brought to Tennessee as a small boy.  Growing up in Van Buren County.

He was educated in Burritt College in Spencer, TN.

He enlisted on the 20 May 1861.

Captured at the Battle of Perryville (Chaplin Hills), 8 October 1862.  Sent to Vicksburg for exchange 5 December 1862.

He states he was ruptured on both sides at the Battle of Chickamauga, 19-20 September 1863. 

The picket line he was on was overrun in a charge and he was captured near Marietta, GA. 27 June 1864.  Sent to Camp Douglas.  Here he took the Oath and was released 27 March 1865.

After the war he operated private schools in Warren and Putnam Counties.

In 1885 He wrote an oft quoted book 'Campaigns and Battles of the Sixteenth Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers, With Incidental Sketches of the Part Performed by Other Tennessee Troops in the Same War, 1861-1865'

Married Martha Jane Grider in Putnam County, TN, on the 16 July1899, with whom he had at least two children.

Filed for a pension on 3 March 1897, number #1721, this was accepted. 

He died on the 2 January1932 and is buried in Stewart Cemetery in Van Buren County, TN, with his wife dying on the same day one year later.
