Perryville Colour Guard,
16th Tennessee Infantry
At the Battle of Perryville (Chaplin Hills),
8 October 1862, the colour guard
was six in number. The four in this illustration are believed to be:
William H. White, with
white beard, standing in back row next to flag.
Hugh L.
Mottatt, without beard, standing in back row.
John W McConnell, seated, front row, with long beard, holding
umbrella.
James C. Biles, seated, front row, with short beard, holding walking cane.
At Perryville the Regiment suffered fearful casualties losing 41 killed, 151 wounded and 7 missing, this is out of the 400 men engaged. The Colour Guard of six men had two members killed and the other four wounded.
