Born 24 Oct 1842 in Warren County, TN, son of William Sandford and Nancy Dykes Brown. His father was a farmer of 200 acres of land, 'taught some schools', and was a minister of the Gospel with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
He had to go three miles to get to his local free school but could hardly ever get there only having in total about six months schooling.
At the time of his enlistment he was living in Grundy County, TN, where he worked as a farmer. He enlisted at Irvin Coledge, TN, on the 18 May 61, along with his elder brother Jackson Van. Buren Brown, both joining H Company.
Was ill with fever at the time of the Cheat Mountain Campaign, VA.
Wounded, as was Jack, at the Battle of Perryville (Chaplin Hills) 8 October 1862, shot through the left hip. In hospital in Harrodsburg, where both were captured, having had a 'long spell of fever while there', from the October to February.

February 1863 at City Point,
VA, again as was Jack.
Arriving back at Columbia with bleeding feet after the Battle of Nashville, 14-5 December 1864, he 'came home' and says a Yankee bought him shoes.
After the war he went back into farming.
He was known within the family as Uncle Russ.
Filed for a pension on the 12 December 1892, number S1171, this was accepted.
Married Elizabeth Tate, with whom he had six children, died 10 November 1887.
Married Mary A. Nunley, who already had three children.
When he was about 80, and living at Palmer, TN, he completed the Tennessee Veterans Questionnaire.
Married Janie Lockhart 19 Nov 1907 in Grundy County, TN.
Died 15 May 1932, Grundy County, TN. His wife died on 5 July 1953.
