Sergeant Milton M. Owen
F Company
Born on the 7 September 1840 the son of Wiley U. and Nancy (Smith) Owen.
He enlisted 14 March 1863.
Promoted to the rank of Orderly Sergeant on the 1 July 1863.
After having one brother shot dead at his side at the Battle of Peachtree Creek, GA, 20 July 1864, another died in a previous battle. He stopped to cover his face with a handkerchief before rejoining the firing line when he was shot twice clear through the right leg, above the knee.
States he was carried off the field and sent to a hospital at Columbus, GA. with gangrene, was hospitalized until April 1865.
Was
paroled at Vineville, GA, making his way home barely able to walk on crutch and
stick, where he arrived at on 19 May 1865.
He married Margaret Owen, and later Henrietta Frances Dowell. Had one son,
although he raised P. H. Horner from a little boy.
Was commissioner of the County Asylum.
Applied for a pension on the 15 April 1908, which was accepted.
He died 5 April 1922 and was buried at Smiths Chapel Cemetery, Putnam County, TN.
