The Company is a member of the Southern Skirmish Association (SoSkAn), who are the UK’s longest standing American Civil War Re-enactment and Living History Society. SoSkAn, and the Companies, aim is to recreate a living history of the American Civil War, that was fought between the succeeding Confederate States, who wanted an independent Southern nation, and the Federals who were determined to maintain the Union. This was fought during the years 1861-65. The Company was formed predominantly with men from Putnam County. Of those who served in the Regiment during the war 146 were killed, 82 died of disease, and numerous were disabled. The Regiment served under various Army Commanders: Robert E. Lee, Pierre T. Beaureguard, Braxton Bragg, Joseph E. Johnson and John B. Hood, in (West) Virginia, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee. The Regiment suffered 199, 49.8%, out of the 400 that entered the Battle Perryville (Chaplin Hills), 8 October 1862, and 171, 54.9%, casualties of the 377 engaged at the Battle of Murfreesboro, 30 December 1862 to 3 January 1863. We have members of all ages, and becoming a member is a different way to make new friends, enjoy yourselves, as well as find out what it was like to live at the time. You will also be away from the frustrations of modern life for the duration of your time with us. Families are very welcome and for those who do want to sleep in caravans, trailers, or even modern tents with their family SoSkAn has a Family Camp where these can be parked, or erected. However, most of the Companies members choose to camp in the traditional military way in white canvas tents and cook over camp fires. There are many different roles for all family members who don't wish to take the field, or are unable to. You will find both males and females taking part in the skirmishes. While we would like you to attend every event if you can’t make them all that's fine, you won’t be the only one! Come along and join us for the weekend. We will lend you a uniform, and find room in a tent. You just have to bring along something to sleep on, and whatever you wish to eat and drink. |
