NEWS, EVENTS - DECEMBER 24 2001 Lambada at Xmas- Usually lambada shuts down during xmas week, but during the championship finals on Wedsnesday 12th December, Berg announced that Havana would be open on Boxing Day for lambada. On Havana's noticeboards, it says opening times are from 6pm onwards on Boxing Day. Though of course lambada starts later as per usual. So all you lambadeiros dont be a turkey, forget those TV films and resist the desire to be a couch potato and come and enjoy some lambada at Havana on December 26th!Mondays at Sound - The continuing saga of Sound saw a suggestion emerge three weeks previously from the Sound staff that it would definitely run on December 17th. Enquiries on that day revealed that it was definitely on, but a check of the club in the evening found only six people had turned up, and no lambada DJ. However, despite the lack of lambada music, lambada and salsa was danced to other tunes without too much difficulty! It seems that at present there are plans for the club to re-commence in the new year though no definite date has been given. Lambada Holiday in Brazil - From February 2nd to 18th, there will be a lambada holiday organised by Latinmania. This year it will include the Axe carnival. The first 10 people who book (before the end of January 2002) will get 30% off the cost of the holiday.

They were chosen as the winners out of a potential six couples. One can argue that it is a milestone in the history of lambada in the UK, as it seems quite clear that this is the first time that a black couple has ever won a competition - as opposed to a mixed couple. If this is true then it is great news for lambada indeed, as on asking around no-one seems to know of any other black couples who have won competitions, and my own recollections are of mixed or white couples at past competitions who have been winners. However, if anyone should know otherwise, then let us know. On another matter, the entry prices for the competition were exhorbitant, and the standard of some of the competitiors (excepting the winners - who many agreed had a high standard of dancing) was an area that needs improvement.Lambada in Cardiff - One of the few places outside London where lambada can be found is in Cardiff. The details are as follows: Michael's lambada classes (beginners & intermediate) are at Bar ISIT, off St Mary Street, Cardiff, on Mondays from 8pm. In addition, there is also lambada at The Rioja Bar (above La Brasserie) on Mill Lane, Cardiff on Thursday nights from around 9pm, which features a good amount of lambada mixed in with salsa - and a nice dance floor. (many thanks to Cathi from Cardiff for this information.) In the past there has been lambada in Manchester also, as at least two clubs featured it. These were Copacabana in Dale Street, and La Tasca in Deansgate, both in Central Manchester and a stone's throw from the other. Any information on these, or any other lambada clubs that may exist in Manchester, or anywhere else, do send an email to: ukclubs@lambadanews.netSamba on the water? - Montreux was the place that instigated 'Smoke on The Water,' but in London let's say its Samba on The Water? Yes, that is with the question mark added! Its not a song we're on about, but a boat. Barco Latino, the well known salsa venue moored at Temple Pier has just had a refurbishment, and its now called The Yacht Club. Reports abound that it will have live samba shows (as well as salsa) as a regular feature. Keep your eyes peeled for any further news or information and lets see if these plans do get afloat... There are 24 different ones, all with a lambada or samba theme, or at least a
connection to lambada. Last year 15 were featured, and this year there are more because of additional clubs such as Combinacion Latina, Scala, and Brazouk, plus one or two unusual ones.
