The presentation by the Lord Lieutenant of the county (Hugo Brunner) of the award for the best kept village (newcomers class) took place on Nov. 4th, which is a seat to go in the cemetery, plus a basket ball post for the new playpark. The award is the first Elizabeth Brunner award, in recognition of his mother.

East Hendred has been awarded first place in the Newcomer category of Oxfordshire's Best Kept Village 2001 competition.

In addition to this, the village was awarded third place in the Medium villages category behind Shipton-under-Wychwood and Cropredy.

The competition, now in it's 45th year, attracted a total of 65 entries from villages in the area. The Oxfordshire Rural Community Council worked particularly hard this year to attract villages who had never previously entered, so the award for East Hendred as winner of the Best New Entry was especially rewarding. This year, the sponsors of the event included the Daily Telegraph, Calor Gas and the Duke of Marlborough.

The judges were particularly impressed by the fantastic condition of the public areas and superbly-maintained sports fields and tennis courts.

The village will be awarded a commemorative plaque to display at a presentation ceremony later this year.
