Update from Jonah on people helped in Monze District

Many of you will be aware of the number of containers sent to HHI, Monze, Zambia, over recent years. There is another one on the way, due to arrive in July/August.

Described below are just some of the people who have turned to HHI(Z) for help, with the help they have received as a result of meeting Jonah Sialumano, the Disability Affairs Manager in Monze.

St Mulumba – Choma. We were received by the School Headmaster and other members of staff. The school authority were more than ready to receive us. Two groups of people were met thus, the St Mulumba pupils and the physically disabled who applied for wheelchairs through Sky Radio after listening to our current programme.
The pupils were seen by Metric and Moka, with the help of the school Nurse and the Special School Teachers. While the Physically disabled were assessed by myself and Gift Banji (Sky Radio). The reason was to see those who really deserve to be helped with wheelchairs.
However, more helps in other areas were noted. These include the 11 blind persons from Tuyandane Blind Community Center in Mwachipapa, Choma east. According to their Representative, Clitus Moonga who was born blind in 1951, told HHI that as a Center, they have a piece of land which they were given by the relevant authority (government) for farming, but there has no farming taking place due to lack of farming inputs and livestock to keep. Clitus said Tuyandane Blind Community Center is ready to venture into Goat Project. Therefore, there is need to visit the Center in corroboration with the Department of Community Development and or Department of Social welfare of Choma.
We also visited the home of Joseph Sichilobela, totally blind and born in 1934. He lives in Mwapona compound, Choma. The house he lives in is almost collapsing. Also seen, whose house needs to be thatched, is Joyce Muzyamba. Both live in Mwapona Compound.
Malambo Kaingu aged 43, physically disabled and Angele Sikampondela aged 30, physically disabled required clippers.
Some of the people who came have eye problems and thought that their eyes would be tested.
Those with ear problems were referred to Audiology.
Two physically disabled were given crutches. The rest physically disabled requires wheelchairs.
Choma disabled people have formed a Networking group of all types of disabilities. There is need to empower them with Knitting and Sewing Machines so that they start production and raise money for their living.
