News from Zambia

For those of you who were unable attend our May Supporters' Evening and listen to our Zambian guest speaker Jonah Sialumano,

Jonah

it is wonderful to report that the Chipembele Hammermill has been successfully installed and has already generated ZMK 1,000,000 profit (£125). (See earlier report.)
Just this week HHI Zambia was able to help the Chipembele steering committee open a bank account for the first time!

Jonah's visit to the UK was a resounding success although he was forced to stay a week longer in the UK because of a knee dislocation. Not only did he have first hand experience of the NHS,

the sea, and the generosity of HHI supporters he returned to Monze with a wheelchair which has since been donated to a disabled young lady, Prisca Hatembo.

Jane and George: Living with disability in Zambia.

Jonah Sialumano's live broadcast on the subject of 'Who is disabled ?' was transmitted early on a Monday morning in June on the Sky Radio programme 'Atubayeye Balema' (Let us remember the disabled).
Listening in on her small radio in Choma was Jane Mweene. Jane is barren. Not ever having had a child and being HIV positive she has been left alone, unemployed and uncared for. Because of Jonah's broadcast, Jane contacted HHI and now with support is able to integrate with her family and friends. She has made a real difference to her community, helping HHI provide for the needs of the disabled people in Choma.

Eleven blind people from Tuyandane Blind Community Centre in Choma will now be receiving money from our Alternative Gift Catalogue funds for goat rearing and an audiology service has been provided for the community.

George is 62 years old, but has spent the last 35 years on his back in a bed which just about fits in his rondaval. He has no mobility at all and relies on his cousin, Gertrude, to lift him on her shoulders to take him to bathe and to go to the toilet.

An avid Sky Radio listener, George is wise and informed. He greatly appreciated the visit made to him by HHI while other organisations have passed him by.
George will benefit from a specialist adjustable orthopaedic chair freely donated by Brookland Care Home, Risca, Newport. The need for this chair was identified by Jonah during his May visit to the UK and it is currently on the container.

It is re -assuring to know that HHI has identified the needs of the disabled and through your support is able to make a difference.
