(This family tree was formerly "Family of John Cairncross, Gladsmuir.". Information kindly supplied by Diane Peebles, nee Middlemass in January 2010, has enabled me to update this tree, taking it back by one generation. Also, Norah Glaus created an Ancestry version of this family tree, in January 2013, enabling me to add more detail.)

George, born c1821, in Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire, Scotland. Died Mar 18, 1890, aged 69. Married to Elizabeth Neilson Craig 24 Feb 1843. Elizabeth was born c1819, in Garveld, Haddingtonshire. She died 18 Mar 1900, at Esperston Limeworks, Parish of Borthwick, Mid Lothian, Scotland. Elizabeth's parents were Thomas Craig, born 1790, and Maggie Burn, born 1792.

a.  Margaret Burn, born Mar 6, 1844, in Gladsmuir. Christened 27 Mar 1844. In the 1851 census she is age 7 living in Haddington. See her birth registration.)

b.  Thomas, born Mar 3, 1846, in Dirleton, Haddington, Mid Lothian.

c.  John, born Mar 23, 1848, in Gladsmuir East Lothian. Died 25 Feb 1931. Married Catherine Bremner 2 Dec 1881. Catherine was born c1855, and died 24 Feb 1942. John was employed by an Insurance Company, Session, Clerk & Sunday School Superintendent at the Presbyterian Church at Viewforth, Edinburgh.

1.  George Thomas b. 1887. awarded OBE. 1.1.1947. Was at one time Principal at GPO HQ. Retired as Postal Controller of the Home Counties Region 1948. Lived in Croydon.

a.  Annette. Toured West Indies & South Africa with England Netball Team. Played 50 times for England. Captain for 2 years. Organising Secretary of all England Netball Association 1964. Administrative Officer Central Council of Physical Recreation 1974. Has appeared in Guinness book of Records England netball achievement.

b.  Joan Margaret was at one time Asst. Director of the Old Vic Theatre School, Bristol. Trained at the Guildhall School of music & Drama. m 1952. H.F.Jones.

2.  John Bremner, born 1 Aug 1889, in Edinburgh, and died 17 Oct 1968. Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. In the 1930's was Chief Accountant of Vickers Armstrong Ltd at their London Head Office. Keen amateur Actor and holds the National Operatic and Drama Association Long Service Medal and 5 bars, representing 55 years service. Lives in Whitley Bay, Northumberland, also associate of the Hospital Administrators.

a.  Ian George Little, born 30 Jul 1916. Accountant. RAF Pilot 4/5 years during WW2. Member of the Institute of Costs & Works (now known as Management) Accountants. Lives in Bredbury. Cheshire.

1.  Kathryn Diston, born 6 Jun 1955. B.Sc.(Hons) Edinburgh. Dip.Ed. now a schoolteacher.

2.  Barbara Bremner, born 17 Jun/Jul 1957. Certificated teacher studied for B. Ed. Sheffield University.

3.  Margaret Scott, died August 1963.

4.  Elizabeth Craig, born 1891, died Jul 17, 1892.

d.  Margaret, born c1850, in Gladsmuir. In 1861, aged 11, was living at Ballencrief, Aberlady, East Lothian. (Margaret not listed in FamilySearch.)

e.  Elizabeth Hutton (Neilson), born Sep 25, 1853, in Haddington, East Lothian. Died 1908, aged 55, Dunblane. In 1861 was living at Ballencrief, Aberlady, East Lothian. Married Nov 23, 1877 to Archibald Bathgate, born Jul 14, 1855.

f.  George, born Nov 30, 1855, in Gladsmuir, Haddington. In 1861, aged 6, was living at Ballencrief, Aberlady, East Lothian.

g.  Mary Brown, born Mar 13, 1859, in Gladsmuir, Haddington. she died Jan 14, 1893, aged 33, in Edinburgh. In 1861 was living at Ballencrief, Aberlady, East Lothian. In 1871 and 1881 was living at West Bank, Gladsmuir. Married Nov 13, 1888 to Frederick Augustus Lyon, born 1842, died May 5, 1900. There is a note in the records, 'Free Church 2nd wife'. 1. George Cairncross, born Nov 30, 1885 at 10 Bryson Road, Edinburgh. In the 1891 census, he is aged 6 living at Edinburgh St. Cuthberts with his aunt and uncle Archibald and Elizabeth Bathgate. In 1901, aged 16, he is employed as a Locomotive Guard Cleaner. He arrives in Sydney, New south Wales, aged 18, on Apr 15, 1904. On Mar 13, 1916, he is in the Australian Imperial Force 12th Battalion, at Black Boy Hill. He married Jun 3, 1916 to Margaret Helen McNeill, at St. John’s church, Freemantle, WA. George died Oct 6, 1917 at Westhoek, 3 miles east of Ypres. It is likely he was the illegitimate son of Mary and an unknown father. See photos of George and Margaret. 2. Elizabeth Mary Lyon, born Aug 21, 1891 School House, Merchiston, Edinburgh. Died Aug 30, 1891. Spina Bifida.

h. Isabella Hutton,(the name Hutton not in Nora’s tree), born Apr 19, 1861, at Aberlady, Haddington. She died 14 Jul 1952, at Rose Place, Earlston, Berwickshire, aged 91. She was married to George Orphant 25 Apr 1879. George was born 20 Feb 1855 and died 8 Jan 1941, aged 85. His occupation: labourer. In 1881 they lived at West Bank, Gladsmuir. In 1891 they lived at Ormiston Road, Buxley Farm Serv’s Cottage, Tranent, East Lothian. In 1901 they lived at Hoprig Farm Cottage, Gladsmuir, East Lothian. 1. Thomas Craig Cairncross Orphant, born c.1880 Gladsmuir. Died Jul 16, 1965 Queensland. Married Jul 12, 1905 to Sophia Anderson Lawson, born Nov 15, 1883, died Nov 26, 1995, aged 112.

a. James Orphant, born Apr 17, 1906.

b. Isabella Orphant, born Jun 5, 1907, died Aug 31, 1997 aged 90.

c. Sophia Anderson Orphant, born Apr 24, 1909, died Apr 15, 1994 aged 85.

2. Jemima Orphant, born c.1886, East Lothian. Jemima was aged 5 in the 1891 census. In the book “From Witches to Dragons”, by Patricia Coupe, on page 79, there is the following reference, ”Ten years later, in 1901, Rev. Turnbull’s family employed Jemima B. Orphant aged 15 as domestic house maid. Jemima’s parents, George and Isabella, lived in Ormiston and they had two other children.

3. Adam Bridges Orphant, born Nov 11, 1891, Trenant, Haddington. Married Lizzie.

a. Adam. Died while serving in World War 2 as a private in the Reconnaissance Corps.

4. Lizzie Orphant, born c.1893, in Earlston, Berwick.

5. George James Orphant, born Mar 5, 1896, at Buxley, near Tranent. Died Jun 20, 1974, at East Fortune Hospital, East Lothian, aged 78. George, a ploughman, married Mar 18, 1921 at The Square, Dalhousie Mains, Dalkeith, to Mary Margaret Wright Graham, a dairymaid. Mary died Apr 16, 1939, aged 42.

a. Isabella Cairncross Orphant, born May 26, 1921. Isabella, of Riggonhead Farm, Tranent, married Dec 27, 1947 at Tranent Old Parish Church to John Elliot Hogg, a coal miner, of 60 Lindores Drive, Tranent. Isabella died Nov 1, 2009, aged 88, at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and is buried alongside her parents at Liberton Cemetery, Edinburgh.

1. Mary Margaret Hogg, born 1950.

2. Alexander George Hogg, born 1958.

3. Angela Isabella Hogg, born 1962.

b. George Orphant. Died Nov 4, 1999, aged 76. Buried at Tranant Cemetery. Married Ella Martin. Ella's real name was Alison but was known by everyone as Ella. She died Oct 3, 1999, aged 74. Here is a photo of the headstone for Ella, George and their son George.

1. Robert Orphant, born 23rd Aug 1953. Married Elizabeth Quinn in 1983. They had 3 sons.

a. Robert Orphant, born 15th June 1978. Married 2 Aug 1999 to Emma Townsend, born 11 July 1979. They had two children.

1. Cora Orphant, born 4 Sept 1997.

2. Connor Orphant. born 22 Jan 2001.

b. Lee Orphant, born 4 May 1979 died 3 Feb 2021. Never married or had children before he passed away.

c. Wayne Orphant, born 13 April 1981 and died 9 October 2018. Never married or had children before he passed away. Lee and Wayne are buried with each other and beside George, Ella and George in Tranent cemetery. Here is a photo of the headstone for Wayne and Lee.

2. George Orphant, was born 14th May 1956 and died 12th of June 2017. Never married or had children before he passed away. He was buried alongside his parents.
