    There are two types of participles in Bosnian, present and past participles.

    • Present participle (gerund)

      The present participle is generally used when two actions are taking place simultaneously. The present participle is formed by adding the suffix -ci to the 3rd person plural of the present tense of the Imperfect.

      (Oni)itaju itajui Reading
      (Oni) govore Govorei Talking
      (Oni)rade Radei Doing

      Example: A lady came in wearing a hat.
      Seeing the queue another lady came in immediately.
      She served me while chatting to another customer.

      Past participle (gerund)

      Active past participle: This is formed by adding the suffix -- vi (after a vowel) or --avi ( after a consonant) to the infinitive stem:

      Sluati Sluavi Listening
      Vidjeti Vidjevi Seeing
      Spavati Spavavi Sleeping

      Passive past participle is verbal adjective

      Verbs that end in –ati have passive participle in -an.
      Verbs that end in -iti , -eti/-jeti have passive participle in -jen.
      Verbs that end in -eti have passive participle in -et

      Examples:

      itati itan/na/no Read
      Vidjeti Vien/na/no Seen
      Uraditi Uraden/na/no Done
      Prekinuti Prekinut/a/o Stopped
      Zauzeti Zauzet/a/o Occupied
