Ascension:Some of us may well have destinies, but there is no fate. Despite wealth, competition, reputation, power, and any other heights attained, the tower usually falls. Even if it doesn't, there's nothing up there worth having. One rare excpetion: enlightenment. Few attain it, and the lesson is often learned with great difficulty. Cerebus had to ascend three times before he got the point, and he's still struggling. Every time he expected to gain power over others, yet he was merely shown himself. Astoria did not have to ascend once, yet she got the point while talking to Suenteus Po. Cirin ascended, yet used cognitive dissonance to reconstruct her personal reality: in the paradox between her beliefs and her perceptions, her beliefs won every time.
