The Mavericks and me by Jez Brown It's not been easy being a Dallas Mavericks fan...and it's been even harder being a British Dallas Mavericks fan..... If following a perennial losing team wasn't bad enough, getting the opportunity to watch them play has been a very expensive kind of loyalty..... For example, had I used the services of Pontel to obtain videos of every game this season, it would have cost me over £450 and counting...not really an option now is it! Now though it seems that my loyalty has been rewarded..... I'm writing this the day after the Mavericks stunning (take a deep breath here) Game-5-First-round-series-winning-play-off-victory (that is a word isn't it?) over the Utah Jazz..... The Mavericks are now finally becoming a force to be reckoned with and i'm not happy! I'm not happy because of Mark Cuban, i'm not happy because of Don Nelson, i'm not happy because of Michael Finley, Dirk Nowitzki or Steve Nash, i'm not happy because of the Washington trade that gave the Mavericks Juwan Howard and Calvin Booth...I could go on but I think you get the point..... Now don't get me wrong here, i'm so happy FOR these guys i'm just disappointed for myself..... You see, I liked being the only guy around wearing a Dallas jersey, I liked sharing my Mavericks woes with just a few other like-minded people on the Mavericks message board, I liked the fact that when the Play-offs came around I wouldn't be missing anything because the Mavericks weren't involved..... Now I have worries (can we match-up to the Spurs?), now I have sleep deprivation (due to following the play-offs on NBA.com's Courtside Live) making me unable to focus in the workplace, and perhaps worst of all. i'm probably not going to be the only guy around wearing a Dallas Jersey in the summer...although I may be the only one in the old style jersey with Jason Kidd's name sitting over the #4 instead of Michael Finley..... Here's hoping I remain unhappy for a long time yet! |
