Draft Just Days Away, No. 1 Pick Still
Not Certain by Davo With the NBA Draft taking place on Wednesday, it is surprising that there is still no clear favourite for the number one selection. That pick belongs to Washington, and it is rumoured that Michael Jordan might opt to trade the pick in return for proven veterans. But again, this is not certain. The main candidates for this pick are high school prodigees Eddy Curry, Kwame Brown and Tyson Chandler, but the experience and all-round ability of Duke senior, Shane Battier may also be tempting. Seton Hall's Eddie Griffin could end up anywhere in the top 5 or 6. All of these players are big men, which is unusual for the NBA Draft. Right now I say the Wizz would be better off taking 6-11 All-American Kwame Brown and then packaging him with a couple of present Wizards in exchange for a top quality point guard, to possibly play alongside MJ in the backcourt. Realistic possibilities are Gary Payton, Andre Miller and Mike Bibby. And Jordan could bring in a well-known vet at PF/C, possibly former Dream Teamer Hakeem Olajuwon or even free agent Chris Webber. With that, the Wizards would be talking Playoffs, possibly even NBA Finals, maybe even an NBA Championship. So, what will happen? Will MJ go for the deal I mentioned, or will he want to keep the pick and go for proven talent in Shane Battier? Could he be tempted by the potential of developing big man Eddy Curry? Who knows what will happen on Draft Day? Well, whatever happens, it should give us all something to talk about. The Draft is on Wednesday, June 27th and you can catch all the coverage on NBA.com from midnight onwards. |
