According to Scandinavian mythology, the runic alphabet was discovered by the supreme god Odin while he was for nine days and nine nights hanging head down, hung on Yggdrasil, the
tree of the World that supports the whole of the Scandinavian universe. Thanks to this mastering of the runes, Odin, warrior and shaman, gained also rule over death - ability to cure and inspire life back into the dead, however
also the power over the world of the dead, wherefrom to return was not even possible for gods.
This was how the runic writing was from the very beginnings connected closely with magic and used for magic purposes and
practices – for telling or predicting future, interpreting destinies, as well as for attainment of goals striven for. Each character is connected with some individual deity or with more deities from Scandinavian mythology, thus
containing in itself a sequence of meanings deriving from such connections and relations. For successful spreads and reading of the runes relaxation and maximum concentration are required, as well as thorough cleaning of one's
mind from ordinary everyday thoughts that might possibly prevent any successful contact with the runes occult power.
Correct interpretation of the runes under contemporary circumstances requires good knowledge of essential
meanings of each and every rune, and broad connecting thereof to the essence of the question posed. It might happen that, at first sight, runes give a queer or inappropriate answer to the question asked, but careful reading of each
rune's meaning and of mutual relations thereof can help one determine the right answer, which, of course, never is the only possible.
