FAMILY HISTORY
The early Clarkson connections originate mainly from within the Wensleydale and Coverdale regions of North Yorkshire. Subsequent generations and their families eventually moved on, with later forebears having been born and bred in nearby locations such as West Witton and the village of Catterick.
In carrying out his research during a return visit on holiday to Yorkshire in 1976, John had managed to trace the Clarkson line back in time to the year 1656. When asked, why did he stop there, John's reply was that he could not go back any further was because he was unable to understand Latin!
The following chart therefore commences as "First Generation" in 1656.
FIRST GENERATION
Christopher CLARKSON. He was married to Elizabeth SCOTT in 1656 in Wensley. Children of Christopher CLARKSON and Elizabeth SCOTT were:
Elizabeth Clarkson was born in 1658. She died in 1674.
Michael CLARKSON.
Anthony Clarkson was born in 1663. Date of death unknown.
Juna Clarkson was born in 1668. Date of death unknown
Ann Clarkson was born in 1674. Date of death unknown.
Ffaith Clarkson was born in 1677. She died in 1679.
SECOND GENERATION
Michael CLARKSON was born in 1660. He died in 1735. He was married to Elizabeth. Elizabeth died in 1747. Children of Michael CLARKSON and Elizabeth were:

Matthew Clarkson was born in 1702. He was christened on 9 Aug 1702 in Wensley. Date of death unknown.

Margaret Clarkson was born in 1712. She died in 1728.

John CLARKSON was born in 1705. He died in 1776. He was married to Mary. Mary died in 1772. Children of John CLARKSON and Mary were:

John CLARKSON was born in 1728. He was christened on 9 Feb 1728 in Wensley, North Yorkshire. He died in 1790. Children of John CLARKSON were:

Elizabeth Clarkson was born in 1764. She was christened on 2 Sep 1764 in Wensley. She died Unknown.

John Clarkson was born in 1769. He was christened on 23 Jul 1769 in Wensley. He died in 1778.
FIFTH GENERATION
Joseph CLARKSON was born in 1767. He was christened on 29 Mar 1767 in Wensley. He died on 22 Apr 1841 in Wensley. He resided at Preston Mill.
The first historical reference to Preston Mill was recorded in 1421. The Mill lies to the south-east of Preston-Under-Scar village. Joseph's headstone can be found in Wensley Church churchyard.
He was a Farmer and Corn Miller. He was married to Mary ALDERSON on 5 May 1799 in Wensley (Age 32). Mary ALDERSON was born in 1773. She died on 25 Oct 1856 in Wensley. Children of Joseph CLARKSON and Mary ALDERSON were:
Thomas CLARKSON.
John Clarkson was born on 24 Jul 1801 in Wensley. Date of death unknown.
Mathew Clarkson was born on 17 Jan 1808 in Wensley. Date of death unknown.
Joseph Clarkson was born in 1810. Date of death unknown.
Thomas Clarkson was born on 1 Jul 1810 in Wensley. (This relationship to father or spouse is unverified, having been identified via the I.G.I. Index, and may therefore not necessarily be correct).
Johnathan Clarkson was born in 1812. He was christened on 11 Oct 1812 in Wensley. Date of death unknown.
Jane Clarkson was born in 1814. She was christened on 26 Jun 1814 in Wensley. Date of death unknown.
James Clarkson was born in 1817. He was christened on 25 Sep 1817 in Wensley. He died on 22 Feb 1850 in Wensley.
SIXTH GENERATION
Thomas CLARKSON was born on 3 May 1800 in Wensley. He was christened on 14 May 1800 in Wensley. He died on 13 Jul 1875 in Coverham. He resided at Coverham Low Mill. He was a Farmer and Corn Miller.
Thomas Clarkson's headstone can be found in Wensley Church churchyard. It makes reference to "Thomas Clarkson of Coverham Low Mill". Coverham High Mill lies near Coverham Abbey (which is now in ruins), by Coverham Bridge on the north side of the river Cover. Low Mill is situated on the opposite bank, on the south side of the river by Coverham Bridge.
He was married to Elizabeth WINTER in 1828 in Arkengarthdale. Elizabeth WINTER was born in 1809. She died on 16 Nov 1871 in Coverham. Children of Thomas CLARKSON and Elizabeth WINTER were:

Joseph Clarkson was born in 1833. He died in 1894.

Jemima Clarkson was born in 1844. She was christened on 30 Dec 1844 in Coverham. Date of death unknown.
William Thomas CLARKSON.

SEVENTH GENERATION
William Thomas CLARKSON was born in 1846. He was christened on 8 Nov 1846 in Coverham. He died in 1925. He resided at Coverham Low Mill. He was a Farmer and Corn Miller.
The headstone of Isabel Clarkson (first wife to William Thomas Clarkson) can be found in Wensley Church churchyard. The inscription makes reference to William Thomas having been of "Low Mill". William Thomas having been the youngest surviving son of Thomas appears to have inherited Low Mill from his father.
He was married to Isabella YEOMAN in 1868 in Coverham. Isabella YEOMAN was born in 1848. She died on 2 Jul 1879 in Coverham. She was also known as Isabel. Children of William Thomas CLARKSON and Isabella YEOMAN were:

Francis William Clarkson was born in 1870. Date of death unknown.
Joseph Edwin Clarkson was born in 1873. Date of death unknown.
Fred Clarkson was born in 1876. Date of death unknown.
Amy Clarkson was born in 1879. She died in 1879 at the age of 3 months.
He was married to Hannah Arey in 1879 in Aysgarth. No Issue. Hannah Arey was born in 1849. She died on 12 Mar 1896. William Thomas CLARKSON and Hannah Arey had no known children.
He was married to Isabelle Thwaites in 1897 in Coverham. Children of William Thomas CLARKSON and Isabelle Thwaites were:
Arthur Edward Clarkson was born in 1897. Date of death unknown. He was understood to have been a Private Detective to the King.
EIGHTH GENERATION
Thomas Winter CLARKSON was born in 1868. He was a Coachman to Sir Henry Lawson in Jan 1914 in Brough Hall, Tunstall. He died on 24 Feb 1949. He was a Farmer.
He was married to Belinda CHISHOLME in 1897. Belinda CHISHOLME was born in 1874. She died on 1 Jun 1962.
