To be able to maintain a healthy diet and a socially accepted appearance, it is important to replace any missing teeth in the mouth by any one of the means available in modern dentistry. As the result of economical and social reasons that might influence the decision, it is up to the patient which option is preferred.
There are 2 categories of dentures depending on whether you have any standing teeth in your mouth or not:
Full dentures--where there are no standing teeth Partial dentures--where there are standing, stable and relatively healthy teeth left in the mouth that is or can be used for chewing.
Types of Dentures:
Acrylic (plastic) Dentures:
Are made completely of acrylic and can be partial- or full dentures. Although the thickness of the material might effect adaptation, once used to this type they are very functional and aesthetic. Is the cheapest option available. Is not available on the NHS
Metal-Based Dentures:
Are made of Chrome-Cobalt, Stainless Steel or Gold alloy in combination with acrylic. Has superior comfort and fit characteristics. The material used results in a much thinner, but very strong denture. Is more expensive. Is not available on the NHS at this practice.
