Why are Fillings Needed?

There are many reasons why a tooth may need filling. Here are a few:

  • To repair decayed tooth structure.
  • To repair damaged tooth structure.
  • To cover a root filling.

If teeth are damaged by decay, a filling is necessary to repair the damage. The 'bad' piece of tooth is removed and replaced by a filling. A lining is usually placed over parts of the cavity to reduce sensitivity, and a filling is placed over this.

How is a Tooth Filled?

Decay

The decayed dentine has undermined the enamel. There may be a lot decay in a tooth with a very small surface hole. The decay is removed, and the tooth is prepared to support the filling.

A pin may be needed to provide additional support.
