It is set in a wide sweep of bay overlooking the Scottish hills over the water with the Lake District mountains behind. It is a real get a way from it all place but it has a post office and a very good general store along with a restaurant and a few pubs and hotels. It started life as a fishing village but in the 18th Century it became a popular local bathing resort because of the healing powers of its water. Today, the beach has won a European Yellow Flag for its bathing water.
