Aspinall 440 Locomotive - 'The Aspinall Flyer'
drawing by Barry Lane, with kind permission.
Introduced by Aspinall in 1891 these large locomotives survived until the late 1920s when they were scrapped as part of the LMS standardisation policy. The 440 was an imposing locomotive and was used for the trans Pennine express services.

Carriages
Semi-elliptical roof corridor carriages
D84 in early LMS livery
These carriages provided the mainstay of the long distance express passenger services operated by the L&YR, either in there own right or as through services with other companies such as the Caledonian, LNWR, LNER, NER & the Midland Railway. These vehicles ranged far and wide, serving not just four main London termini daily but including , Bristol, Yarmouth & Edinburgh and beyond. After the formation of the LMS many of these carriages were transferred to the Scottish region providing passenger services throughout Scotland and especially the Highlands.

Semi-elliptical roof, non corridor suburban carriages

These carriages provided the mainstay of the short haul passenger traffic that was such a feature of the L&YR's Northern roots. In consequence there was a high proportion of third class carriages. After grouping these carriages dispersed to other areas within the LMS region. Photographic evidence shows these vehicles under LMS & BR in Scotland, Wales & the South East "Home counties".
