Carriages

Clayton 6 wheel carriages
The Midland Railway had a substantial fleet of 6 wheel carriages. These were used for long distance express services, indeed many were built by the Midland Railway's Scottish partners specifically for joint services. Large numbers of these carriages survived to the 1930's and the odd one to the 1950's in engineering use. It was not uncommon for an odd 6 wheel carriage to be attached to a train of bogie carriages in the early LMS period.

Clayton arc roof bogie carriages
Introduced from 1881 onwards these carriages were remarkably similar to the Clayton 6 wheel stock of the period. They were used principally on suburban services. A number were altered during their life by the addition of lavatories and several were converted for push pull working in 1907.

54' Clerestory roof carriages

These clerestory carriages were introduced for long distance services operated by the Midland at the turn of the century. They were used in both the Midlands own and Scottish Joint services worked in partnership with the NBR and the G&SWR.
