Sainsbury's
has been fined £14,400 for misleading customers
about a series of special offers. Shoppers were
overcharged on household items including crisps,
mineral water and smoothies at the company's
store in Brookwood, Surrey. In one case a board
displaying a three-for-two offer for baby wipes
was more than four months out of date.
Sainsbury's admitted 12 charges at Woking
Magistrates Court of misleading customers under
the Consumer Protection Act 1987. The court heard
an undercover trading standards officer visited
the shop on November 27 last year after a flood
of complaints from customers. Alan Renner,
prosecuting for Surrey County Council, said that
out of 100 special offers tested by the officer,
12 were found to be misleading.
He said in one example, customers taking up a
buy-one-get-one-free offer on Pete and Johnny's
smoothies at £2.49 were in fact charged £3.99.
The store also overcharged on its own brand
Caledonian and Cumbrian mineral water, Walker's
Crisps variety packs, KP Hula Hoops, Dettol floor
wipes and Homepride Mexican sauce. Mr Renner
added Sainsbury's had been fined for similar
offences on five previous occasions in England
and Wales. Victor Fanawopo, for Sainsbury's,
blamed individual price controllers at the store
in Brookwood for the mistakes. The company had
now introduced extra checks on prices at all of
its 510 stores and made them a "specific
target" for managers.
