Moebius created the "Lieutenant Blueberry" series in 1963 using his real name of Jean Giraud. The stories were written by Charlier. Both art and plots were very well researched. At the same time the artwork owes something to the films of John Ford and Sergio Leone.
Eventually he grew tired of producing the same sort of work and together with a collection of other artists, including Philipe Druillet, he founded Metal Hurlant in 1974, which was primarily a fantasy and science fiction magazine, with a hint of sex about it. It was in Metal Hurlant that one of his most famous creations, Arzach, appeared. Arzach flies through the skies, mounted on a pterodactyl, encountering various alien creatures along the way. The strips are wordless and only vaguely connected, being fairly unconcerned with a continuing narrative structure. Even the spelling of Arzach continually changes.
Moebius has also worked with the film maker Jodorowsky and the script writer Dan O'Bannon on a film version of Dune, which was subsequently abandoned when a distribution deal fell through. By way of therapy O'Bannon went and wrote the script for Alien. Moebius went on to design sets for Tron, He Man and the Fifth Element. The illustrations that he did for another O'Bannon script influenced thelook of Blade Runner.
Moebius has also worked with Stan Lee on a Silver Surfer Story called Parable. This page has been accessed |
