| The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) investigates all types of marine accidents, both to ships and to people on board them. Our fundamental role is to determine the circumstances of an accident and its causes. Our aim is to improve safety at sea and prevent accidents in the future. It is not the MAIB's job to apportion liability, nor, except when necessary to achieve our fundamental purpose, to apportion blame. The MAIB does not enforce laws or carry out prosecutions. | |

| NUMAST is the acronym for the National
Union of Marine, Aviation and Shipping Transport Officers.
The head office is in London, with a regional office and
a welfare complex in Wallasey, just across the Mersey
from Liverpool. NUMAST is a trade union, affiliated to
the TUC (Trades Union Congress), and the ITF (International
Transport Workers' Federation), with membership open to
shipmasters, officers, cadets and other staff serving in
the UK and international fleets and ashore in maritime
related industries. NUMAST's membership covers a wide range of Merchant Navy officer ranks and nowadays also includes a wide range of professional staff serving at sea, on oil rigs, as marine pilots and in related shore-based occupations such as harbourmasters, vessel traffic services staff and superintendents. |
