The Wounds of Gaza
A talk by Dr Ang Swee Chai

Tuesday 19th January 2010, 7.30pm
Oxford Town Hall, St Aldates, Oxford

Two surgeons from the UK, Dr Ang Swee Chai and Dr Ghassan Abu Sittah managed to enter Gaza during the Israeli invasion of December 2008 and January 2009, and wrote an article which was published in the Lancet.  Dr Swee will describe some of her experiences and the horrific and often unfamiliar range of injuries they witnessed and treated there.
With her husband Francis Khoo, and some friends, Dr Ang Swee Chai was a founder of Medical Aid for Palestinians.  She is also the author of the book 'From Beirut to Jerusalem' about her time in the refugee camps in Sabra and Shatila in1982 when the massacre occurred. Dr Swee is consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal London Hospital.

Message from Dr Ang Swee Chai, sent to NOW on 25 January 2010

Petition: Civil Rights for Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon

Dearest Friends,

If you are concerned about the situation of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon - now is the time to make a difference. Please click on the link below and sign the petition, and help make a difference to the Palestinians in Lebanon. There is every chance of persuading the Lebanese Parliament to change the situation where they are not allowed to undertake 72 professions, and own a home. Granting them basic rights as residents in Lebanon does not affect their Right of Return.. I am the 80 signatory, and I hope when I look at this again this afternoon there will be many more of you who will sign up. Please pass this on to encourage others to sign the petition and make a difference!
With very best wishes
Swee Ang

EXHIBITION

'CHILDREN OF GAZA UNDER FIRE '

Fusion Arts Centre, Princes Street/Cowley Road Oxford

November 7-15

"LOSS OF INNOCENCE"
A major part of the exhibition will be a display of drawings from the children of Gaza themselves brought out of Gaza by Rod Cox, a British peace activist who travelled to Gaza in March 2009.  The drawings are a powerful witness to the children’s experiences during the bombardment, and Rod has already displayed them in a range of venues throughout Britain, most recently at  Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.  A short video clip of some of the drawings when on display at a primary school in Chester can be viewed on YouTube, on Rod's blog at http://rodcoxandgaza.blogspot.com/ (then scroll down) or click on the arrow below.

Special evening event at Fusion Arts Centre, Friday 13 November, at 7:00pm

On the Friday evening, there was a performance of 'Seven Jewish Children', a short play by Caryl Churchill, an account by two Oxford drivers who went on the Viva Palestina aid convoy of the conditions they witnessed in Gaza, and a reading from 'A Little Piece of Ground', a novel about children living in Ramallah, by Elizabeth Laird. The publishers, Macmillan, have donated a copy of this book for every school in Oxford.

Merlijn Twaalfhoven's musical project 'Carried by the Wind'

The Project:

'In April 2008, composer Merlijn Twaalfhoven created two unusual
music performances with about 100 musicians, singers and children
in the towns of Ramallah and Bethlehem on the Occupied Palestinian
Territories.
Contrasting music styles, professionals and children from refugee
camps, local and European musicians came together in a
performance on rooftops and balconies, surrounding the audience.
The music created a symbol of connectedness and freedom,
connecting people from diverse communities in Ramallah and
crossing the segregation walls in Bethlehem freely.'
