The following organisations have been suggested by members of NOW as ones which we feel are doing valuable work in the field of peace and justice, or are contributing directly or indirectly to this aim. Explanations of the organisations' objectives are in the main taken from their own websites. Please feel free to suggest other appropriate links, especially to groups based in Oxfordshire.

WILPF

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is the oldest women's peace organisation in the world. It was founded in April 1915, in the Hague, the Netherlands, by some 1300 women from Europe and North America, from countries at war against each other and neutral ones, who came together in a Congress of Women to protest the killing and destruction of the war then raging in Europe.

WILPF is an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with National Sections in 38 countries, covering all continents. Its International Secretariat is based in Geneva with a New York UN office.

Women in Black

Women in Black (WiB) is a world-wide network of women committed to peace with justice and actively opposed to injustice, war, militarism and other forms of violence.

'We are not an organisation, but a means of mobilisation and a formula for action. Women in Black actions are generally women only, and often take the form of women wearing black, standing in a public place in silent, non-violent vigils at regular times and intervals, carrying placards and handing out leaflets.'

To see a list of Women in Black groups round the world (amounting to several hundred), go to WiB's International website here.

One very active Women in Black group is WiB Leuven with a highly informative website and many excellent pictures of the 2005 Gathering in Jerusalem, thanks to Lieve Snellings. For photos, click here to go to the website then click on any caption beginning 2005 WiB.

OSTWC

Indymedia UK is a network of individuals, independent and alternative media activists and organisations, offering grassroots, non-corporate, non-commercial coverage of important social and political issues. No Sweat!

No Sweat is a campaigning organisation based in the UK but operating worldwide, which fights for the rights of sweatshop workers, not only in LEDCs but also in Britain - for example in London's East End, in the borough of Tower Hamlets. No Sweat encourages consumers to choose ethically sourced clothing, whilst firmly rejecting boycotts. Their excellent, highly informative website is here.
