Life Skills
At St Andrew’s College, we are aware that boys can often be overwhelmed by the choices that are open to them. We offer assistance to our pupils so that they can make well-informed, mature decisions in every area that will be critical to their futures. On the pragmatic side, our pupils are assessed by means of aptitude tests, and direction is offered regarding the selection of subjects for matriculation examinations. Pupils are assisted in planning their tertiary education – an experienced Careers Guidance Counsellor from Rhodes University offers valuable assistance in this regard. Pupils are also given assistance in drawing up CVs and with completion of their applications to tertiary institutions. Interviews are arranged with organisations offering bursaries for tertiary education and over the years many St Andrew’s College pupils have been the recipients of valuable and prestigious scholarships. We remain the only school in the world that can offer alumni a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University on an annual basis as well as a similar scholarship, a Douglas Smith Scholarship, every few years to Cambridge University. As part of the curriculum, pupils receive counselling aimed at building confidence and helping to deal with the pressures and issues relevant to adolescents, such as peer pressure and substance abuse. |
