A brief history of St Andrews rugby
- 27 April 1878: WT Hayton was the first player to kick off for St Andrew’s College in a schools football (rugby) match. From these records it would appear that St Andrews was the first school in South Africa to play the game.
- By 1883 the school could field six teams, but finding matches for them was a problem. In the 21st century, with rapid transport available all over the globe, finding fixtures for all of our teams is still a problem – a glance at our location on a map will go some way towards explaining this.
- 1888: first College tour. Travelled the 130km to Port Elizabeth to play Crusaders Club XV.
- 1890: JM Powell and HC Boyes played in the Grahamstown District Men’s Team and J van Niekerk represented Eastern Province against the British Isles touring team.
- 1891: Powell and Boyes became Springboks. Powell remains St Andrew’s only Springbok captain.
- 1895: RC Mullins becomes the first Old Andrean to receive an Oxford Blue.
- 1896: Inaugural Cape tour. The team played three matches in the Anderson Cup matches in Cape Town.
- 1902: First XV unbeaten in all 10 matches played.
- 1903: Bishops tours Eastern Cape for the first time, beating College on Lower Field, 5-0.
- 1904: The first match of the season saw the jersey of today make its debut: eight inch light blue band across a dark blue jersey.
- By 1907: Six Rhodes Scholars had been sent to Oxford from St Andrew’s. One, RH Williamson, was later to play at flyhalf for England. SN Cronje, Rhodes Scholar in 1905, played for the Springboks in 1912.
- 1926: DR RF Currey the doyen of College Headmasters (1939-1955) said that: ³ Š in 1926 St Andrew’s had a rugby side which has become a legend.² The team of 1926 won all 10 of their matches, scoring 51 tries and a total of 236 points for and 17 against.
- 1929: Toured Natal, scoring good wins against Michaelhouse and Hilton.
- 1933: First tour of the Transvaal (now Gauteng). The match against King Edward VII High School was played at Ellis Park as a curtainraiser to the third Test between the Springboks and the touring Australian side.
- 1937: A College member of staff, Danie Craven, and an old boy, D van der Vywer, were selected to tour Australia and New Zealand with the Springboks. The South Africans won the series in New Zealand, a feat not equalled by the All Blacks in South Africa until 1996.
- 1953: Considered one of the College’s great rugby years with the team going unbeaten, scoring 277 points (64 tries) and conceding 39 (4 tries). College beat Bishops 28-0.
- 1959: First tour of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). College, unbeaten in South Africa, beat Prince Edward, unbeaten in the Federation of Southern and Northern Rhodesia and Malawai, 27-6.
- 1960: Another superb season for College, not losing a game in the Eastern Cape and Border. By the end of the season, Philip Court had scored 36 tries in 33 appearances for the first XV.
- 1964: The first Craven Week was held. College’s D Gradwell, M Denoon Stevens and P Wilson were selected for the Eastern Province team, with Wilson picked as captain. Gradwell subsequently became the first person to play at both Craven Week and the Nuffield Cricket Week, a feat not equalled until Nick Mallett did so a decade later.
- 1966: Axel Ohlsson becomes coach and College gets four players into the EP Craven Week team. Scrumhalf Bruce Cloete went on to play for Western Province and the South African Gazelles in 1971.
- 1968: RB Snow sets a new individual points record of 131 points.
- 1969: This season’s side became the highest scoring team to date. In 13 matches, 338 points were scored and 84 conceded.
- 1974: Nick Mallett selected for the EP Craven Week team and the South African Schools’ team. Mallett went on to play for Western Province and South Africa, and is currently the Springbok coach.
- 1979: Ohlsson stepped down as coach.
- 1980s: A decade of disappointment less than 50 percent of matches were won. However, in 1986 the Rugby Club fielded 19 teams in the major derby fixtures, a peak which is unlikely to be bettered. 1987 was the best year of the decade with the first XV losing only five of the 18 matches played. It was also the decade to see College’s first overseas tour, with 30 players touring the UK, Italy and Switzerland, winning five out of six matches.
- 1989: The end of the decade produced what many regard as the most talented team to represent College. The team was well balanced with skilful backs and a solid set of forwards. Kenny Kilkenny surpassed H St.J Rowley’s record with his 55 matches for the first XV, contributing a total of 253 points.
- 1990: Despite narrow defeats on the local circuit, this year’s team ended the season with an unbeaten tour to the Western Cape, recording College’s first win over Bishops since 1978. Russell Bennett and Tyrone Clarke played at Craven Week, with Bennett going on to play for Border, Natal and the Springboks in 1996.
- 1991: If the 1990 team signalled the long-awaited revival of College rugby, the team of 1991 placed St Andrew’s firmly at the pinnacle of schoolboy rugby in South Africa.
- 1992: The Rugby Club could only field 13 sides, but each of them attempted to produce exciting running rugby, and most of them succeeded. D Jackson and P Goodyer played Craven Week. A Fani went on to represent Natal in the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup.
- 1995: Unbeaten tour to Australia. John Kettlewell gained full EP colours.
- 1997: Sixteen teams fielded, the highest for almost a decade. Recorded a home victory against Bishops for the first time since 1975. Richard Watt played Craven Week.
- 1999: Mike Fennell took over from Andre Jacobs as first XV coach and led a young side through an exciting season, ending the year as one of the top 20 schoolboy sides in the country.
