SELECTION & GROWING

When growing bonsai fuchsia the aim is to create a flowering tree in a small pot, always keep this in mind when selecting a fuchsia for your subject. The encliandra species or hybrid encliandra having a small leaf and flower makes an excellent initial choice, start your plants in half pots starting with a 1 inch F, then 3 inch half pots, continuing in increments of 1 inch upwards to 8 inch or a half-full seed tray, these are then used for shaping etc until it is ready for its final dish. When your tree is in its final pot, root pruning will need to be done annually in the spring before new growth appears and the rootball treated with ‘Superthrive’: prune and shape branches 4-6 weeks after root pruning and repotting.
